Assistant prof at Johns Hopkins. Working to understand contextual and structural mechanisms that contribute to inequities across time
I joined the editorial team of an amazing journal committed to equity work. I'm surprised and disappointed: assistant professors say yes to reviews, and associate and full professors decline or don’t respond. Everyone is busy. But if you’ve climbed the academic ladder, steady it for others.

I just donated to Pasadena Humane Society in honor of my best buddy, Kozmo who passed last March. If you have the means, see if you can help too, as they support those who can't evacuate with their four-legged family members!

My latest on the lie that won't die, and why we're still talking about autism and vaccines.

Tracing the history back to "refrigerator mothers," I argue that to answer this question, we have to grapple with our culture of mother-burden and mother-blame.

What happened after California banned suspensions for willful defiance in grades K-3?

Short answer: suspensions didn't decline faster than they already had been, and large disparities by race/SES/IEP remained.

In 2013, the California state legislature took steps to narrow disparities in exclusionary discipline between student groups, especially for students with disabilities and students of color.

Two years ago @drthema posted something I've read every day since:
May stillness find you.
May ease flow toward you.
May you give yourself the gift of boundaries.
When you get pulled in a million directions, may you discover the gift of cutting strings.
I will read it again every day in 2024
