They know “DEI” doesn’t mean unqualified, but they are taking actions that try to make it true.
Indeed, if you make a new program aimed at minorities, incentivize them to apply with better pay and less teaching, and then discourage them from applying to other NSF fellowships, then cutting that program will absolutely take a bunch of minorities right out of academia 13/n

As a science advocate, something I hear a lot is that people think government would be better if there were more scientists and physicians elected to Congress. Senator Bill Cassidy's cowardice in voting for RFK Jr, show us that expertise is useless if you have no morals.

Today the Trump admin abruptly and indefinitely terminated many of the activities of the National Institutes of Health, the $50B/year collection of agencies that power the US biotech and health ecosystems. Even if these orders were lifted tomorrow, the disruption would be enormous.

Why care? 🧵
Why should the public care about the freeze on the NIH? Aside from the need for scientific pursuits to make our society better…
-For every dollar we invest in NIH research, there is a $2.5 return.
