I'm... maybe not an amateur, but I'm not the best at juveniles, so I was wondering if you might be more confident than I was. I do think we were looking at the same species, based on the photos, but I'm just not sure which!

How sure are you of black-crowned vs. yellow-crowned? I struggled with a similar-looking juvenile last week and landed on yellow because of the white outlines on the wing feathers.

Beautiful Anhinga! Unlike many other water birds, they don't float on water. They swim around with their head out. They have to stand like this to dry their feathers after!

That's the problem with trying to impose order on nature: in biology we almost always have to drop a ton of "most of the time"s, "often"s, etc., as your source here does. Makes it almost impossible to make any hard and fast statements. :-P

Hi Janet! I think you might be thinking of dragonflies (spread) vs damselflies (together). It's not quite as straightfoward with butterflies, moths, and skippers. Butterflies might have them tented or out wide, and skippers (which these look like to me) have front and back wings at different angles!

Have you listened to the Black American Magirology episode of ologies? It contains a brief but nuanced discussion about the origin of sweet cornbread about halfway through. www.alieward.com/ologies/blac...

I've always found the Sherwin Williams logo disturbing, and thinking of that red paint covering the Earth as right-wing ideology really seems to line up here.

About the time I was like, "oh no, his friends are tearing up" I knew it was all over for me.

If “less than half or even 1/3” of people I might interact with are dangerously violent and unpredictable and I don’t have a way to tell who’s who, it’s only logical and reasonable to generalize and assume anybody I interact with is dangerously violent and unpredictable.

I have never been more excited for my second watching of a gamechanger episode.

Literally the first thing I did was acknowledge the mistake (and additional ones besides)? 🤷‍♂️
June 4, 2025 at 1:17 PM
That was certainly an egregious and harmful mistake, and the CDC have continued to make them, but we should be careful not to conflate the scientific community with the CDC. The community have quite rightly pushed back against CDC guidelines where they’ve clashed with the data.

Also, if it's a push button ignition, you never have to take the keys out of your pocket, so they're more likely to just stay in there rather than ending up loose in the car.

To lock my car while it's running, I have to roll the window down, get out, close the door, reach in, lock the doors, then hit the auto window up button and pull my arm out of the way. I also have to use the physical key to open it again afterwards (fob won't do it).

How about I try to name five non-dinosaurs that (some) people think are dinosaurs?
- Ichthyosaur
- Plesiosaur
- Pterosaur
- Dimetrodon
- Glyptodon
