Walt Kelly, on reawakening dangers (1954):

"For Lewis Carroll and the Children"

The gentle journey jars to stop.
The drifting dream is done.
The long-gone goblins loom ahead;
The deadly, who we thought were dead,
Stand waiting,
every one.

absolutely bizarre to see a violent, rogue american regime, which is threatening military attacks on a bunch of major trading partners and close allies, and openly fantasizing about hitler-style wars of territorial conquest, covered in the tone of horse-race political commentary

Again, there is no “doctrine.” There never was a doctrine. Or a policy regarding “overseas entanglements” or considerations of “regime change.” Applying such terms and analysis to this guy is pointless and misses the actual point: He’s a windsock that blows in incessant gusts of his own madness.
Once a critic of overseas entanglements, President Trump now appears willing to embrace regime change as a tool of American influence, raising questions about whether his “America First” doctrine is being redefined.

Anyway, big congrats to Nobel Peace Laureate Maria Corina Machado for getting the war she practically begged for — only for it to blow up spectacularly in her face.

And of course, to presidenta-por-vida Rodriguez for gaining a powerful new patron and everything else she ever could have wanted

Rep. Seth Moulton comes on CNN and starts by saying: "Is anyone going to just stop for a second and be honest? This is insane. What the hell are we doing? We've got a lot of problems in America today, and invading / occupying / running Venezuela does not solve any of them."

Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

5. I have no respect for Donald Trump. He diminishes everything he touches. But focusing on him right now is like being bitten by your neighbor’s unleashed, unfenced rabid dog and focusing on the dog. If we don’t hold his enablers to account we’re going to keep getting bit.
