South Scrimshaw: Nathan O. Marsh on Nature Docs, Solo Dev, and The Grand Budapest Hotel
Indie dev and artist Nathan O. Marsh has built one of the most distinctive new worlds in indie gaming almost entirely alone. South Scrimshaw, a hand-painted, free-to-play visual novel about alien whales and speculative ecology has quietly earned a following for its meticulous art and unconventional storytelling. With South Scrimshaw Part Two nearing release, I chatted with Marsh about the long road of a solo dev, the films and games that shaped his artistic sensibility, and the patience it takes to build a world this strange and beautiful by hand.

Weird media: ECHO is an obscenely beautiful stealth/action/puzzle game. Mechanically interesting but driven by incredible theming and imagery. Makes me desire a full universe with just the bits shown. The screenshots do it no justice store.steampowered.com/app/551770/E...

I'm begging everyone who hasn't yet to read this book. The premise, about a man living in an infinite house, is terrifically inventive, and it goes in a direction you don't expect. No other living author writes with such a keen sense of horror & beauty. The book of the decade.

Weird media: Lorn's Lure is a first person platformer with climbing and parkour elements. One of my favorite niche subgenres but climbing around in actual megastructures that feel enormous is a treat store.steampowered.com/app/1417930/...

Weird media: 2236 AD is a (maybe intentionally) strange narrative. Normalizing telepathy as not just a day to day thing, but so mundane as to be a side note and exploring the limits of information (including some neat info theory) makes for a great visual novel

This tale began five years earlier, in the spring of 2231. Mankind has evolved a new kind of communication ability called “telepathy”.

Slightly weird game: South Scrimshaw is a visual novel set out as a ecological documentary. Absolutely sold by the art, but the story and slowly but surely learning about something of an alien ecology is fascinating.

South Scrimshaw is the story of a newborn whale in a vast alien ocean. It is a richly illustrated experimental visual novel, written in the style of a nature documentary.
