The word “dollar” traces its roots back to a silver-mining town in what is now the Czech Republic.

That history says more about Czech attitudes to money than most policy debates.

I wrote about it here:

The Czech attitude to the euro now feels less like policy and more like political identity.

The government wants to change the constitution to keep the crown – forever.

New piece on why postponement became permanent – and why I’ve made my peace with the Kč.

After 20 years in the EU, euro postponement feels less like strategy and more like political identity.

New piece coming tomorrow.

PM Andrej Babis says his country will _not_ scrap the so-called 'Czech ammunition initiative' that has contributed greatly to keeping Ukraine's war effort going.

Czech taxpayers will no longer contribute to the scheme, but the country will keep its coordination role, he said.

A small detail on an old map of Central Europe sent me down a historical rabbit hole.

More tomorrow morning.

Czechoslovakia's music censors accidentally created a parallel pop universe.

ABBA, the Bee Gees, Elton John ... re-recorded in Czech with entirely new lyrics.

YouTube is now the custodian of these musical treasures.

They’re still at it, with no sign of a breakthrough.

Read what’s at stake - for Europe, for the Czech Republic, and for Ukraine.

And why European leaders like Andrej Babiš may find it ever harder to sit on the fence.

EU summits are almost invariably called “crunch moments”.

This one, over Russian assets and Ukraine, really is.

I’ve written about Babiš, Brussels coffee breaks, and why the middle ground is slowly disappearing from European politics.

At 71 and rich beyond dreams, Andrej Babiš could have spent the rest of his life playing golf.

Instead he's achieved a stunning political comeback.

Subscribe to my new Substack – Based in Bohemia – for regular insight on Czech politics and society.

“You should start a Substack,” they said.
“It’ll be fun,” they said.
“People will subscribe,” they said.

So I did.

It’s called Based in Bohemia, and the first post looks at Andrej Babiš’s vast business empire.

Give it a read. You might like it.

Oh to be a fly– or another kind of bug – on the wall of the emergency Starmer, Zelensky, Merz and Macron meeting in London tomorrow. European leaders have been obsequious about Trump’s zigzags in public; but much more honest in private if last week’s leak to Der Spiegel can be believed. 1/

Czechs have a fine sense of humour and irony, like the British (still the gold standard IMHO).

But some Czech 'black' humour leaves me cold. Some shit just isn't funny.

Most of what Turek has tried to dismiss as 'black humour' falls into this category I think.

Big weekend for the Czech Republic.

Babiš has ruled out the Communists/Stačilo! as a coalition partner, which leaves Tomio Okamura's anti-immigrant SPD, and/or the anti-Green Deal Motorists.

But it's an election, and anything could happen.
