What has made you smile today?

I’m maybe half drunk, haven’t eaten all day, so it’s a feast right now ! 😄
I think the Americans call it day drinking, but here it’s just Frühshoppen and part of the weekend. Prost!
And the sausages are really fucking good.

Been a long day, but still early. Freshly collected smoked Bratwurst in the pan and a süffiges Dunkles dabei. 😜

🤪 🤷‍♂️

Picked up a bag full of bratwurst (some smoked) made by friends on Friday. Love me some local sausage. Demanded an 11 o’clock beer.

I was just thinking, without Twitter, this orchard would not have been possible. I’m glad I deleted my accounts last year, but there was once a great cider and beer community there that sponsored a lot of the trees. I must post that story here some day.

Your sponsored Oberösterreicher Weinbirne tree has survived its first year at the IPPP orchard, @akrennmair.bsky.social. Now it’s settled in hoping it springs up to catch up with the others 🙂

Opened a mystery bottle on the top shelf, a perry, and it’s just perfect. Rich, umami, deep diving baked pears and raspberry.
Checking the log book, I think it’s from 2023, Brunnenbirne, Oberösterreicher, Schweizer and Luxemburger Perry pears.

I think I’d put the Kwak glass near the top of that list.
But I have an Aventinus glass and keep it for Aventinus 😁

Cracking read from @barmas.bsky.social in Cider Review. We have cideries in Virginia that make both great traditional cider and interesting experimental stuff. Makes for a great cider culture in Virginia.

This ended up longer than I expected. I think it’s not complete analysis, but I hope it triggers some comments and feedback.
Those of us in the bubble often feel artisanal cider is like craft beer in some way, but it just can’t be. I didn’t touch on wine parallels as I don’t have enough knowledge.

I can recall bits of watching the movie on TV. I was really fascinated by the character.

And in a few hours my latest on @ciderreview.bsky.social will be published. A look at trends in cider compared to craft beer, or more like why we don’t see the same kinds of trends and hype in artisanal cider. It was a long birth and probably not near complete, but I hope it prods some discussion.

It’s been an evening of 3 different types of Fleischkäse and 1 type of Bratwurst, with Kartoffelsalat, Nudelsalat and beer. A housewarming. Kinda stuffed and overeaten given how proud I was with my weight loss this morning 😄 Oh well. I’d better sleep through tonight!

But I have observed your 4am interactions with @janetrad.bsky.social, but didn’t want to intrude 😄

And there we go. 🌞 Can go home now.
In the liminal spaces again, ‘tween field and hedgerow, and there’s a sickly perry pear tree that survived a cull here a few years ago. Not sure if it’s a seedling or grafted yet.
January 16, 2026 at 7:29 AM
It was a typo, usually it’s 3 for me 😆
January 16, 2026 at 7:26 AM
And while I’m here, I noticed one of the protection tubes had disappeared from one of the trees we planted a few years ago. This is a Burrow Hill Early cider apple. There’s a Royal Wilding in this row too. Need to plant 3 more trees here as a farmer drove 2 of them over, deer got the other.

That’s what happened, and when I turned off the alarm I promptly fell asleep for nearly an hour till my wife woke me 🤪
So good morning. Late out, will start work a bit later as brain just ain’t at it. Waiting for the sunrise.
January 16, 2026 at 7:13 AM
Of late, I fall back asleep about 6, half an hour before my alarm rings. That makes things somehow worse 🤪
The 4 was a typo, was meant to be a 3.

Thanks! 🙂 I have phases of it going on the past 30 years. This one not getting to me quite yet, but bloody tired this week. Oddly, the stuff I can take to help not helping this time 🤔
