YOUR ENEMIES LAMENT YOUR VERY EXISTENCE. DO YOU NEED TO CLEAN YOUR GLASSES?

Let us say that finding the time has not been easy... but priorities.

(And, now I come to think of it, why it is particularly appropriate to be doing it still in the shadow of yesterday's Feast of Christ the King.) ⚓

In the middle of all of *waves hands* whatever on earth this nonsense is, giving blood says that when it comes down to it, our shared humanity and compassion for each other is much more important than any earthly kingdom or border. And that's why I do it.

I'm very happy to answer questions about blood donation if anyone's interested. It is a thing that I feel very strongly about, and it is also a way of showing that you care about the well-being of people you will never meet, simply because they deserve to get the medical care they need.

That was donation 28 *does a small dance* and it means my blood will be in stock as hospitals start to gear up for the Christmas period. I'm A+, which means I can donate to A+ and AB+ people - that means they don't need e.g. O- blood, which can be used for pretty much every patient.

So in small achievements today, I gave blood! Hurrah! You can find out more about donating in the UK and sign up to be a donor here:

After a really rough Monday morning (never fun to start with a doctor's appointment!), I was so glad to come back to leftover chocolate tart. ❤️

(PS: Everything's fine overall; nothing dangerous got diagnosed. But I still needed that chocolate comfort afterwards!)

Great to read this table, the week after my institution announces a voluntary severance programme, to see the government introducing a policy that will cost us an extra *£13 million*
These are HEPI estimates of the 20 institutions affected: I think this illustrates the impact if the tariff is absorbed in full by institutions.

What share of the 6% tariff different universities may try to pass on to fees - or the impact might be on demand if they did - is not publicly known.

We pour billions into saving an economically tiny steel industry whilst actively destroying one of our largest export industries. (Yes, higher education to overseas students who already massively subsidise UK students, are counted as exports).

Also, I have found the *best* quick & simple crumble recipe and it is a boon for using up fruit and, yes, we also have crumble tonight.

For the USHE crowd, fathom this: the systemic pattern in UKHE the past few years has been to CUT the best, most award-winning, most-grant-getting, most-publishing programs.
The cuts at Leicester University are also targeting some of our top REF (and NSS) performers: History; Film Studies; Chemistry; Modern Languages; Geography, Geology & Environment

Feeling *extremely* smug and satisfied with this evening's dinner, not to mention once again impressed with how good Riverford recipes are. #TinyJoys

Bless academia, where someone, somewhere, has *always* come up with a scale of measurement for what you want to measure.
November 23, 2025 at 5:25 PM
It really isn't their fault, a lot of the time, but it's a problem that we find particularly with the US practice of uploading BA honours theses to institutional repositories which then get scraped on the assumption that everything in the repository is at the same academic level.

I'm trying to encourage their use as a source of extra bibliography, but it's so hard to make the distinction clear when this stuff turns up on the library catalogue without any warnings.

I’m a cis woman who not infrequently gets mistaken for her (cis) husband on the landline. None of this stuff is consistently obvious.

(I also have a butch cis friend who has been unpleasantly challenged in the loos, and the scenario did not play out in the way the LGBAlliance promises).
The LGBTQ community has been saying that targeting trans people will disproportionately affect cis women for FUCKING YEARS. And it does. LGBAliiance treat them like their abuse is acceptable collateral damage to their prejudicial grift crusade.

This is a pattern that pervades the post REF2021 era. See also for example Kent, or at UoA level History, where the top 4 performing UoAs have all faced significant redundancies after their high results.

What does the White Paper (and DSIT/UKRI) mean by advocating 'specialism' in this context? 2/2

RED ALERT: the University of Nottingham is threatening to close its Department of American Studies, putting all staff at risk of redundancy, and ending any American specialist knowledge in the Faculty of Arts.
