Ok, fair. Kirchensaller are usually used for full standard trees. I’m surprised you got fruit that quickly. Farold 87 might also be an option, they fruit quick, and slightly smaller than full standard. Well, still big.

400!
But what kind of rootstocks? And might you need to plan for a shorter growing season?
Maybe plant chosen stocks to establish roots, and then graft on top as you get scions?

Changing at Würzburg. Great city for a wine tour, lovely Sylvaner. And founded by Irish monk St. Killian, as I recall.

When people say I make cider in the Odenwald, I’m tapping this sign.

We stopped getting trees when we got the cat, purely out of expectations that it would not be a good combo.

Looking better now. I clearly gave up on the battle against bindweed this year. Most trees relabelled, will update my database this evening, and already earmarked 22 trees for completing the phase 2 perry pear orchard. Council also wants some trees from me, so I should sell some, to make space.

Sometimes a graft doesn’t take and the rootstock just drives on through. But this is a chance to graft onto a well established root system, up high, chest or head height, like they did in the past. Here a slightly wonky Z-graft, that cambium wanted to expand, so healed nicely.

As it happens, a friend of mine had to do a detailed survey of Bacon’s studio, so it could be recorded and I think moved and reconstructed as it was.
Not sure that makes me feel better though 😁

This is a record of the work done on this particular cellar. Wow, 10 years ago I completed it! Not long after we moved in (after 4.5 years of heavy renovation). So easy to forget the years of work we invested in this old house. Getting on 240 years old now. The house! Tho sometimes I feel that 😁
The Bauernhaus
The restoration of a German half-timbered farmhouse, and life in a small German village. Brewing, orchards, cider-making, wine-making, restorations.
