I feel like every time I look around, there are so many people in positions of trust and power who are clearly lying or taking underhanded actions solely for their own benefit and pleasure, particularly to the detriment of others. Maybe we should be making better choices?

Really. The administration has jumped the shark. No one can ever take a country that allowed this to pass seriously. Lurching from one disaster to another is not a healthy way to live.
