there's a certain way certain people write fiction about disability that really sets my teeth on edge, and it's an approach that I can only describe as 'educational hugboxing'

That the main character has to be relatable and/or likable. Just bcuz they're the MC doesn't mean they have to be a hero and/or always makes good decisions. You'll learn more from a character that makes bad decisions than a character that always make good decisions.
