Trying to keep children off internet sites has three problems: it will be easily worked around by kids; cumbersome for adults; and devastating for online anonymity and privacy

Social media ban won't just affect under-16s
Opinion: Trying to control children's internet use will be easily worked around by kids; cumbersome for adults; and devastating for anonymity and privacy, argues Dr Eric Crampton

People think that these age bans like B416 are a way to fight back against big tech but that’s not what they do. Meta supports the bans because it gives them more power and control over the their users. It’s not protecting anyone by big tech and the surveillance state.
Banning phones or forcing age checks might look like safety, but @etymologynerd.bsky.social argues it backfires.

They hand more data to Big Tech, block smaller platforms (Bluesky isn’t in MS), & stop kids from gaining algorithmic literacy.

Phone bans are book bans.

Ep with @rabble.nz, out now.

We’re used to living online under a few billionaires. If something’s wrong, we complain, leave, or hope lawmakers act.

@mmasnick.bsky.social calls this “learned helplessness.” Bluesky’s idea of letting people choose their own algorithms and moderation aims to give that control back.

Ep out now.

Jonathan Haidt's views are based on bad science when it comes to harms from social media and phones. His solutions aren't based on any research at all.

If we follow his misguided ideas we'll lose free speech on the internet. And it won't help anybody's mental health!

In ‘The Anxious Generation’, Haidt makes the case that social media and smartphones have ‘rewired’ today’s teenagers, but his critics say the evidence tells us something very different - and that bann...

If the B416 campaign wins then Bluesky is likely to simply block New Zealand.

Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

While preventing kids from allegedly harmful content online sounds like a great idea in theory, these laws set the stage for authoritarian censorship, violate young people’s core civil liberties, forcibly expose users to significant privacy risks and utterly fail at their goal of “protecting kids”

The ID check system that b416.co.nz wants to implement in New Zealand means the end of privacy online for everyone.

It doesn’t protect minors, it’s a crackdown on the internet, driven by a moral panic about “the kids these days.”

Banning minors won't keep them off of social media, but it will destroy our privacy.

They tried to implement age verification tech in the UK and it just doesn't work. It won't work here either.

The B416 ban will just drive teens underground making their social media use 'illegal' and endanger them more.

Banning minors from social media is a simplistic solution to a complex problem. It will hurt everyone Luxon doesn’t care about, Māori, Pasifika, rainbow communities, the disabled, etc… it is a cheap damaging solution instead of funding youth mental health care.

OF COURSE it's two wealthy privileged white ladies (Anna Mowbray, Cecilia Robinson) driving the B416 social media ban campaign for kids.

Much simpler and easier than funding the desperately needed youth mental health care, mental health nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists etc desperately needed.
