Unable or unwilling to live like other Kalquorians, who chased rank and personal accolades, the Coydidak strove for independence from their home world. They stopped on planets, moons, and space stations where they were able to sell, trade, and entertain in exchange for money and goods. They survived on their wits and a fierce loyalty to their community. Outsiders were viewed with suspicion. Now they were surrounded by outsiders, the price for Rorix’s people finally winning absolute freedom from the empire and its rules. Though he was in charge of the expedition, he felt the strangeness of those non-Coydidak interlopers he was now responsible for. They outnumbered his tight-knit community.

On her way home, her route taking her among small shops and restaurants, Hayly asked Everly, How was it? The usual. Ben’s AI has developed a rather peevish consciousness. You’ve mentioned it before. Anything in particular bothering them right now? Outwardly, Hayly smiled at those she passed. The typical workday was done for many, and people wore the relaxed demeanors of those looking forward to the night ahead. A few were already seated in outdoor diners and cafes, enjoying drinks and conversation. Do you want a list? They pout over their lack of a name, Ben cutting them off from a personal project he’s working on despite it being Cloud-centric, Ben lying to them, Ben playing games they can’t join in, Ben telling them to fuck off every time they try to suggest an activity they can participate in together. Hayly sent Everly a wave of sympathy as she paused to look at a local artist’s clay sculptures. Encounters with Ben’s net usually left her AI morose, but Everly’s compassion meant they felt obligated to make contact.

The man turned his attention and dismay to the man beside Hedric and simply stared. He could do that until the cows came home, but he wouldn’t make Vermius Woss, also more often known as Dread Lord Doomcleaver, blink. Hedric’s master was a dab hand at staring. He did it all the time at Hedric. “Hedric.” The thin man scrawled on the sheet of paper, looked over his glasses once again, and added. “Nickname, ‘Underlord Gargaroth Doomclaimer’. Really. Warlocks.”

Rory was stumped, #clueless, which, considering he had been following clues to find this little hidden cave somewhere at the very tip of the region, was a little ironic.

There was something he needed to do to open the doors which wasn’t immediately obvious. He hoped it was in the book.
