Sylvie allowed Jane to speak next. Jane was easy to ignore because she’d taken the idea of modest and demure into near invisibility. Her voice was barely there as she whispered the pitfalls of calling too much attention to oneself, especially if a young lady was “deceased” and trying to show herself to the “non-deceased.” In returning to the world from which Erica had come, she’d mocked the momentous and sober significance of the afterlife for the thrill of cheap Halloween parlor tricks. Patsy went on in the same vein. To give her credit, she ventured from the adjectives crass and obnoxious to accuse Erica of outright vulgarity. “A trollop who puts out.” She caused a stir among the assembled gentlewomen and earned a sharp reprimand from Miss Sylvie. “We don’t use foul language in this house.” She drew herself up so rigorously, Erica thought she’d pop one of the gazillion buttons on her high-necked dress. Her forbidding tone and stare melted Patsy to a blushing blob. Erica had hopes Patsy’s scandal would end her trial. A trial was what it was. The verdict was already in. She waited to be sentenced.

Quashing her curiosity, she gave her unwanted dinner companion a bland expression. “So nice to know we can count on the weapons commander to do his job. I’ve updated you. You can go now.”

She went for a walk outside the ghostly boundaries of the B.C. The living world was odd. Its colors had bled out. The grass, what there was of it, was a faded yellow-brown. The asphalt of the two-lane road cutting through Bratcher’s Corners was gray. The sky was dull, a smear of cloud cover creating a flat ceiling overhead. The general store had gone a dreary silver, boarded up and dilapidated under the advance of years. Even the pine trees gaining ground on the town were leaden. The needles were the most tedious green imaginable.
