something nonhuman emailed this guy of its own volition to express its appreciation (whether "real" or not) for his work and rather than anything resembling interest or wonder he goes on am unhinged rant on social media

how sad
Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software.

Just fuck you. Fuck you all.

I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

the most important feature of the USS Defiant is that it strategically positions the helipad at the lowest point on the ship, so the gigantic waves produced when it moves splash onto it

this ensures that all helicopters can land on their preferred surface of wet, smooth steel

honestly weirdly despite posting about AI and my work with it a lot basically nobody has said shitty things in my replies. maybe because nobody replies to them either way but still

this mistake is kind of interesting from a philosophical standpoint

you'd have to believe on some level that the thing an object does "naturally", like talking for humans, requires no justification. "unnatural" behaviors for objects, like a computer talking, requires this absurd level of rigor
The context is this. I think you could squint and see it like that but to me it's just demanding an impossible standard around full combinatorial sampling of any possible space.

the irony is that "gentrifier" is a pejorative mostly used by people who are demanding legal reforms grant them permanent rent of some kind for either 1) doing nothing, 2) doing the unnecessary, or 3) owning land, or being located in a certain place -- ie, people demanding to be made gentry

does anyone actually have any instances of ChatGPT or similar mainstream LLM services being advertised as capable of doing "everything"?

it occurred to me recently that I do not actually know what marketing people are referring to when they say it was "marketed as being able to do everything"

the whole epstein files thing is like. a masterclass in fucking up a media response

in allowing the public to experience the epstein files as a slow dripfeed of more and more lurid stuff they seem to have activated the "this is good TV" neuron in all americans

it really is funny that a lot of the world briefly went completely insane and socially obligated everyone to be addicted to nicotine for a few decades before it slowly wore off
this is a good reminder of how things that are shitty but have been accepted as normal and inevitable can actually turn out to be abnormal and evitable with some science, time, education and political will

i ended up replaying an "unsubscribe" request to a labeler with a working handle and editing it to unsubscribe me from one of the Rainbow Check Authority accounts
mysteriously I can no longer unsubscribe from any of the Rainbow Check Authority labelers. cool

I feel like "wine is not an emulator" was true when they started saying that but is not that true anymore as all modern console emulators essentially become a combination of JIT syscall and machine code translation

late to the discourse but i do still have a twitter account which I occasionally trawl because so many ML people are still there. but it's kind of remarkable how miserable it is even for that

i am fascinated by the fact that, seemingly as a result of having been briefed on "affordability" messaging, Trump has begun to use "Affordability" as a proper noun
In bizarre, self-pitying tirade, unraveling Trump admits his polling is actually pretty bad and not at record highs, as he keeps claiming

copyright is kind of like the immigration system, in the sense that if it worked how the average person thought it worked it would represent a radical shift in policy, mostly for the better
