My grandfather was in Belgium then moved on to Holland in 1943-44 with a squad of Canadian Army Engineers. He was an avid nature lover. He sent this poem home to my mom who was 13 years old.

The birds (which they haven't paid the breeder for) were raised for meat, egg and feathers. They WERE NOT PETS. When the flock got sick they weren't culled and so carried a viral load that could spread to wild and domestic birds. CFIA paid $3000 per bird.
Oh, and they still owe the breeders.
