This is a such an inspiring book about the art of improvisation and how it applies to our lives in general. I think it’s also very relevant also for what it’s like to do science. It was a pleasure to talk with Stephen about it on the Night Science podcast! open.spotify.com/episode/165i...

At the start of each imaging experiment, I have to determine settings for the microscope, which are then kept consistent throughout the experiment. Based upon how long one sample takes with these settings, I can then calculate how much time I’ll need to spend at the confocal.

It was already known that auxins (surprise!) had a key role controlling the end of flowering, plant menopause. Now we can tell you how and where they act in the inflorescence meristem to control the process.

Local regulation of auxin-related pathways in the shoot apical meristem plays a major role during proliferative arrest
González-Cuadra et al. show that repression of auxin-related pathways locally in the SAM is key in the control of proliferative arrest. FRUITFULL regulates these pathways to promote meristem arrest. B...

My luggage if I travel 4 hours to Bremen: one backpack.

My luggage for a nine-day research trip to Wageningen (2h by car): a suitcase, a backpack, and an IKEA bag - because, god forbid, they might not have my specific favourite coffee and tea in this exotic, foreign country 😅
