"We cannot expect people to have respect for law and order until we teach respect to those we have entrusted to enforce those laws" Hunter S. Thompson

This is a critical examination of authority and the belief that the legitimacy of legal systems depends entirely on the integrity of those in power.

Rep. Jamie Raskin to Jack Smith: "If anybody decides to attack you personally, they will only be revealing their own ignorance of what prosecutors do and their own indifference to what the rule of law requires in America. They will only be stroking the wounded ego of a lawless … president."

Trump's smear machine wishes to punish for integrity or competence. It reveals a particularly corrupt system. It suggests that doing the "right thing" (being honest, uncovering truth, acting with integrity) is perceived as a threat by those in power, turning virtue into a crime. It is vengeance.

Jack Smith: "President Trump was charged because the evidence established that he willfully broke the very laws that he took an oath to uphold. Grand juries in two separate districts reached this conclusion based on his actions, as alleged in the indictments they returned."

Smith testified that his investigation developed "proof beyond a reasonable doubt" that Trump engaged in criminal activity.
Jack Smith noted that grand juries in two separate districts—Washington, D.C. (election interference) and the Southern District of Florida (classified documents)—concluded the evidence justified the charges.

Sometimes different perspectives may lead to the same outcome. Or not? Should Europe walk away, or extricate itself? Fact remains that Trump's America has become an unpredictable, volatile, and inconsistent ally. Congress so far appears to allow it.
While historians and politicians often deal with the same events and figures, their roles, and methods differ fundamentally. Historians seek to understand and interpret the past. Politicians use information (including history) to shape the future through policy.

Adam Tooze is an impressive historian. Less so a geopolitical strategist.

America is woven into Europe’s and especially Britain’s security and infrastructure fabric. There is no “getting up and leaving”. There’s extracting ourselves from this situation as quickly as possible.

The Goal Was (And Is) Dictatorship
This was clear years ago: Trump hungered for total power and retribution, while extremist Republicans mocked liberal government and right-wing groups plotted a fascist takeover.

Breaking:

The European Union's legislative body halted work on the formal approval and implementation of the trade deal it reached this summer with Trump.

The move came after Trump said he would hit seven EU countries, plus Britain, with tariffs if they did not allow the U.S. to control Greenland.

The deal would have capped U.S. tariffs on most E.U. products at just 15%.
