Filmmaker. Re-releasing Until The Light Takes Us this year. Dancing as Rome burns, left of left. BDS, Buy Nothing groups, likes mutual aid and respecting the planet, making art, not eating tortured animals, and other super cool things.
I watched the first 5 min of The Substance, a film I avoided b/c it looked so obvious and pedantic. I wasn’t wrong.

This won best screenplay at Cannes. Anora, another so empty and obvious it hurt to watch “female empowerment” film won the Oscar.

I understand perfectly why these get made. Do you?

I had a dream that I changed the title of my film and then after it was made, I was watching it and every time actors would say words that were in it, I was so afraid they’d say the whole thing. This one really got inside my head.
John Waters and his Baltimore pals would always applaud, quietly and politely, whenever the title of a movie appeared in the dialogue.
👏
this is a real line

Babes really? Voting? That’s your solution? I don’t think YOU understand the moment we’re in. Wait how old are you?
15. I have no parting hope to offer other than that if this bothers you, make sure you vote. Make sure you let those cowardly Rs know that you expect better of them. And make sure we get adults in charge at every level of government in the next election. /fin

The least interesting thing
about Robert Redford is that I met him at Sundance as he was heading to a funeral. He was distracted and I had little to say anyway. Now I’m off to see Devendra, which feels like a wake for a heady, fast moving, exciting and torturous moment in time.
Everything is death.

Managed to migrate to Blacksky. Had to use PDS Moover with my browser (Duck Duck go). It took me a long time; it will take you five minutes. If you, like me, mess up and don’t do the comrade option first time, it’s easy to fix: just go into your Blacksky settings and change the handle.

If I were editing a column about Charlie Kirk’s political genius, I would tell the writer he needed to quote Kirk’s actual political beliefs. If the writer responded that doing so would weaken or distract from his argument, it’d be a pretty good sign that the column was not ready for prime time.

I first met Ezra Klein when he was a 19 year old UCSC student. I’ve seen him high in an Adams Morgan rowhouse backyard. I’ve watched him defend Megan McArdle’s honor. I remember JournoList. That op-ed is the most embarrassing thing I have ever seen Ezra Klein say in his entire adult life

The pleasures of re-watching classic Johnnie To can’t be underestimated. Exiled (2006) is so iconic. And fun, damnit. The world’s always been fucked up, but there was a time… sorry I just spit out my dentures. Where was I?

No offense but absolutely f**k the NYTimes: do not work for them, do not read them, do not give them clicks. They are genocide propagandists, and doing any of these things is being complicit.

Israelis are mocking American artists who are standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people by writing their names on bombs that will be dropped on people.
These two artists whose names are written here are Billie Eilish and Mark Ruffalo.

the success the boiler room boycott has had in correctly associating war profiteering culture vultures and cringe sponsored content is a testament to what smaller subcultures can do when their practitioners decide to turn down the check and take collective action.

OMG
Has there been a better opportunity to test the famous Wachtler quote about indicting a ham sandwich?

This is what we want to see! I salute these grand juries.
BREAKING: Federal prosecutors said today they went to a grand jury twice to indict a D.C. woman for assaulting an FBI agent during an arrest by ICE — and were twice rejected.

Notably, she faces the same charge as the District's alleged sandwich thrower.

Had a chat today about the fact that everyone I know chooses cruelty and to cause suffering for others, whether by eating tortured animals or by privileging their own comfort above people being killed without even denouncing it. How to live among those who choose cruelty? Complicity? I don’t know.

My partner got a cancer that’s highly survivable if diagnosed soon enough. He wasn’t diagnosed soon enough and it killed him. And now AI is making doctors LESS likely to correctly diagnose? Ok. So… tell me any benefit of AI that’s worth this.
“The AI in the study probably prompted doctors to become over-reliant on its recommendations, ‘leading to clinicians becoming less motivated, less focused, and less responsible when making cognitive decisions without AI assistance,’ the scientists said in the paper.”
AI Eroded Doctors’ Ability to Spot Cancer Within Months in Study
Artificial intelligence, touted for its potential to transform medicine, led to some doctors losing skills after just a few months in a new study.
