Just another transient astronomer. Also: drummer, runner, public speaker, teacher and science advocate. Love all things #astronomy and #space. Often on the BBC!

Well, hello there Bluesky! I finally made it over here, seems like a friendly place.

About me: I'm an astronomer and passionate science communicator. I teach astronomy, physics and maths, and will talk to anyone about astronomy and space!

You might hear me on the BBC from time to time 🤯
Lovely morning in Salford! If only it had been this nice last night, might have seen the #supermoon 🌕
November 6, 2025 at 11:02 AM
It’s #supermoon time! If you have clear skies tonight (not likely in NW England…!) do have a look. Your brain is not good at measuring the size and brightness of things on the sky, so you might not be able to tell, but a full moon is always nice to look at! 🌕 Spoke to BBC 5 Live about it at 6.55am.

@coachbennett.bsky.social Just did the One Minute Run - haven’t laughed that hard (while running) for quite a while 🤣 🤣 thanks!

It was a real pleasure to visit 4th Sale @girlguidingsale.bsky.social last night, talking careers with the Brownies along with eight other fabulous women, and then taking the Guides on a tour of the sky and the solar system!

As academics, we are expected to go to meetings and present our work. I've had an abstract accepted for a one-day meeting in London - yay. But I've also been told at work that there is no travel budget. None at all. So if I want to go, I'll need to cover the (minimum) £160 rail fare myself.

Just did a fun pre-record with Tony Livesey on BBC 5 Live for his show later tonight. We talked all about interstellar #comet 3I/ATLAS, where it came from (and where it might be going), what we know about its composition, and what it can tell possibly us.

Fun evening visiting 4th Nantwich Rainbows and 5th Nantwich Brownies yesterday, taking them on a tour of the solar system and telling stories about constellations. My first group visit in my role as Ambassador for Girlguiding North West England!

Well, after a day of pretty much continuous rain… the skies cleared, and the moon rose above the trees just in time for a glimpse of the #lunareclipse! 🤩

Hehe. ChatGPT understands FITS files. Nice. #nerd #astronomy

Another fun morning at Media City talking about space with the presenters on BBC Breakfast!

(In the UK you can catch up on the iPlayer for the next 24 hours.)

Such a shame for the ispace team, but they will be back having learned a lot from this mission regardless.

It's true, a very special one-off #NineLessons for the Summer Solstice is coming to Glastonbury this year! Thursday night, hosted by @robinince.bsky.social with lots of special guests on The Laboratory Stage.

Observations not by ESA but by a German space radar, TIRA: blogs.esa.int/rocketscienc.... From various models it seems certain that the reentry was at 6:30 UTC +/- 10 minutes: groups.io/g/mpml/messa...

Conflicting information circulating about Kosmos 482, but it looks like it re-entered between 6.04 and 7.32GMT according to observations from ESA. Here's the likely ground track:
My own plot of the final orbit, showing the Roskosmos estimate of the path between reentry and impact in purple. I guess that Kosmos-482 SA reentered somewhere along this track between India and the ocean south of Australia.

Finally made it the studio for BBC Breakfast! Katy Perry goes to space, and I get to go to Salford 😂

Am in Salford…. that can only mean one thing.

Finally wrote something for @theconversation.com! Together with Prof Derek Ward-Thompson, I wrote about the significance of the discovery of long-chain carbon molecules on #Mars, as found by SAM on the #Curiosity rover in Gale crater. Read the article 👇
Nasa’s Curiosity rover has found the longest chain carbon molecules yet on Mars. It’s a significant finding in the search for alien life

All you need to watch the #eclipse (coffee optional!). I got mine from a very helpful member of staff in WH Smith at Chester station, going to watch the eclipse on the train… that’s a first for me 😂

Are you hoping to see the partial solar eclipse today, but have woken up to a cloudy sky? The Royal Observatory at Greenwich has you covered with a livestream! More details and links to watch 👇

The Scottish weather Gods aren't playing ball, but it's looking fine for England. If you don't have eclipse glasses, raid the kitchen cupboard!

Did you see the SpaceX Spiral over the UK this evening? These are becoming more common as more launches happen, but the geometry has to be right - there isn't one seen with every launch. If you've ever seen the ISS go over, it fades as it passes into the Earth's shadow.
Wow! Check out this amazing photo taken in Tytherington this evening.

It seems that the strange spiral was caused by frozen fuel being illuminated in the night sky as it was expelled from a Space X rocket! 🚀

Had a brilliant day at Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics in Manchester, talking science with my PhD student and catching up with lots of old friends I haven't seen in years.

(As well as talking to BBC 5 Live Breakfast, and BBC Radio Berkshire, about the safe return of the astronauts yesterday!)

You know those days where things just get a bit, well, wacky? I’ve definitely had one of those days.

Sometimes I just have to stop and ask myself: “did that just really happen?!”
