Just another transient astronomer. Also: drummer, runner, public speaker, teacher and science advocate. Love all things #astronomy and #space. Often on the BBC!
Lovely morning in Salford! If only it had been this nice last night, might have seen the #supermoon 🌕

It was a real pleasure to visit 4th Sale @girlguidingsale.bsky.social last night, talking careers with the Brownies along with eight other fabulous women, and then taking the Guides on a tour of the sky and the solar system!

Fun evening visiting 4th Nantwich Rainbows and 5th Nantwich Brownies yesterday, taking them on a tour of the solar system and telling stories about constellations. My first group visit in my role as Ambassador for Girlguiding North West England!

Well, after a day of pretty much continuous rain… the skies cleared, and the moon rose above the trees just in time for a glimpse of the #lunareclipse! 🤩

Another fun morning at Media City talking about space with the presenters on BBC Breakfast!

(In the UK you can catch up on the iPlayer for the next 24 hours.)

Good morning Salford!

Finally made it the studio for BBC Breakfast! Katy Perry goes to space, and I get to go to Salford 😂

I saw it! With my super high tech viewer (thanks to WH Smiths at Chester station for letting me raid their recycling!).

Briefly though, it’s gone cloudy again 😠

All you need to watch the #eclipse (coffee optional!). I got mine from a very helpful member of staff in WH Smith at Chester station, going to watch the eclipse on the train… that’s a first for me 😂

Heard about the #PlanetaryParade? Wondering what to look for? Here’s the view just after sunset tonight, it will be similar tomorrow.

Note that you’ll need a good western horizon to spot #Mercury and #Saturn, binoculars to see #Uranus, and a telescope to see #Neptune.

The Last Leg have a countdown clock for #asteroid #2024YR4 😂

If you’ve heard about it and are worried, don’t be. It’s normal for the impact probability to increase as the orbit is refined, then drop to zero. #dontpanic

The #Moon and #Venus already looking good! #astronomy #LookUp
February 1, 2025 at 5:18 PM
Here's a closer view of the grouping. If you have binoculars do get them out - the Moon is always worth a look, especially at the terminator where you can see crater details due to the long shadows, and if you have steady hands (use a fence to rest your elbows) you might spot Saturn's rings!

Here's hoping for some clear skies later...

Tonight a nice thin crescent Moon will be in the west after sunset, close to Venus and not far from Saturn! Here's the wide view at 5.30pm GMT from NW England - your view may differ depending on your latitude.

Here's the wide-angle view from Stellarium. #planets #astronomy #lookup

And here’s the view by about 3am with the #moon well inside the cluster.

If you have binoculars or a telescope with a wide field of view, do have a look.

The #moon passes right through the #pleiades star cluster tonight! If you have clear skies you can watch it happen over the next few hours.

Here’s the view about now (image: Stellarium).

If you have clear skies this evening, it’s well worth going out to #LookUp.

We have the #moon very close to #Venus low in the west looking gorgeous right now (see image below 👇), and if you have dark skies and a clear view to the north do watch for the #quadrantid #meteorshower

2/2 And here’s another chart showing a close up view of the constellation of Coronae Borealis with the nova marked - get to know the stars now so you can more easily spot when it goes bang!
Both images courtesy of Stellarium.

1/2 There’s a lot of excitement about T Coronae Borealis at the moment. This rare example of a recurrent nova is likely to go into outburst very soon and will be visible to the naked eye for a few days when it does.
Here is a finder chart showing where to see it in the early hours of the morning.

No, not a meteor storm (I wish!!!), it’s snowing ❄️☃️🌨️ 😁

Hello #Moon! Another big full moon this month, looking a bit bigger and brighter than the average (popularly known these days as a supermoon).
If you have a good clear horizon to the southwest you might also catch a glimpse of #Venus just over the horizon - but be quick, it sets at 18:14 GMT!
November 15, 2024 at 5:18 PM
Lovely sky right now, feels like we haven’t seen many stars lately. If you’re in the UK and #LookUp right now, you’ll see the #Pleiades and #Hyades clusters, the bright stars #Capella, #Aldebaran and #Betelgeuse (no, it hasn’t exploded yet), as well as #Jupiter. Here’s the view. #astronomy #space

Two of my worlds collided today when I attended the Cheshire Wildlife Trust AGM at Jodrell Bank! It was great to meet so many members and hear about the great volunteering going on, and it was so nice to be back at the telescope - I do miss the old thing! #telescope #wildlife
