The New York State Department of Health @nysdoh.bsky.social announces the state is experiencing the highest number of flu hospitalizations (4,546) recorded in a single week. That's 1,000 more flu hospitalizations than the prior week.

FWIW: there's a valid concerns about security and the Mayor's ability to communicate. But it wouldn't be a half bad use of public dollars to retrofit an older subway car to be the Mayor's HQ on the tracks.
Mayor Mamdani hasn't moved into Gracie Mansion yet and remains in his Astoria apartment for now, his team says. He expects to move at some point before his lease is up Jan. 30.

His team also shares this pic of him taking the W train to City Hall this morning from Astoria.

Flying taxis and self-driving cars are hogwash solutions. So are the so-called micromobility solutions (scooters, ebikes, etc.)

Buses move 40-60 people in the most space-efficient manner, and yet have routes impeded by assholes on slow scooters carrying 1 guy + cargo for treatlers.
One thing I wrote about here is how technology has made buses *way* more convenient while techno-futurists were obsessed with flying taxis and self-driving cars.

1/1/2026 was better than 1/1/2025.

I am thankful for that.

Just 364 more days to go, one day at a time.

Honestly, the biggest deal in NYC is that we have a Mayor who likes the city and its people and *who wants to be Mayor* and isn't badmouthing us to impress five swing voters in Iowa.

Really, Mayors should never think of running for higher office because there truly is no higher office.

Mamdani’s first act as mayor? Announcing the city as an interested party in my slumlord landlord Pinnacle’s bankruptcy auction. (And a slew of executive orders addressing housing!)

I'm going to second this. Weaver is one of the people who helped get the 2019 rent laws passed finally strengthening tenant protections.

It's got to be said that without real tenant protections and enforcement with teeth (put! slumlords! in! prison!), then YIMBY policy is just REBNY policy.
Cea Weaver heading the revived Office to protect tenants is a big deal. Mamdani putting a longtime tenant activist in this seat is in some ways suprising and in other ways, not at all, given what we know about Zohran. Exciting!

First day of a new era for tenants! Mayor Mamdani announces that he’s objecting to the auction of 93 Pinnacle properties, and he’s appointing Cea Weaver to direct the Mayor’s Office of Tenant Protection. I don’t know anyone who will fight harder for tenants! Watch out Pinnacle and other slumlords!

This guy's name is going to create so much social media chaos, like "The weirdo QAnon general stopped working for Russia and is working with Mamdani now???"
Here's how the NYC Department of Transportation will be different under Mayor Mamdani, according to new commissioner Mike Flynn.

Nice illustration of misallocated resources when funders dump money on bike nonprofits and not sound transit policy

"In the last four years, the city installed about 28 miles of bus lanes and 95 miles of protected bike lanes, according to the Transportation Department"

Meanwhile, in the real world
