"Thou calledst me a dog before thou hadst a cause / But since I am a dog, beware my fangs."
Some fucking ghoul took over the Spotify account of the late #synthwave / #chillsynth artist Florida Skyline, and they're now posting AI slop.

Can anyone give me directions to get this fixed?

…and if the NYS legislature lets itself be bullied, look forward to Kathy Hochul having her State Troopers do the same whenever some cleric says you didn't show their idols sufficient piety

Train Daddy = Trump Toady
Amtrak won't say whether it will make public its criteria for picking a contractor for its Trumpified Penn Station revamp. Their railroad rep stopped responding to Streetsblog's questions when pressed.

Hopeful this is the beginning of the end of Staten Island's occupation of Southern Brooklyn.

Next step, an Assembly District that ends the partition of Bay Ridge that splits the Republicans two seats that exist solely to dispense patronage.

Just got through Toni Morrison's Jazz and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and I really need suggestions for books that doesn't center on cheap off-page homicide.

Did you know @hootsuite.com has a contract with ICE?

If you are still using them, you know what to do. betakit.com/hootsuite-dh...

Even 68% of Republicans. This is like Trump’s Metal Machine Music—a move so out there that even the fans can’t get into it.

I don't think the good guys are usually trying to trick children into getting into their cars
Thanks. We have folks in our community giving vulnerable students rides to school, and a teacher shared that they were putting small stuffed animals on their dashboards to help kids identify safe cars. ICE picked up on it and started doing the same. Horrifying.

Results of two weeks of lowering the volume on news and making better use of my @libbyapp.com subscription.

Paradise Logic (3.5⭐ out of 5) funny but a too cute at times.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things (4⭐) the terror of mortifying memories stretched to novel length.

I took a couple of weeks completely off social media.

This wasn't a resolution; news just got so overwhelming so fast this year, the choice was between logging off and sensory overload.

FWIW: there's a valid concerns about security and the Mayor's ability to communicate. But it wouldn't be a half bad use of public dollars to retrofit an older subway car to be the Mayor's HQ on the tracks.
Mayor Mamdani hasn't moved into Gracie Mansion yet and remains in his Astoria apartment for now, his team says. He expects to move at some point before his lease is up Jan. 30.

His team also shares this pic of him taking the W train to City Hall this morning from Astoria.

Flying taxis and self-driving cars are hogwash solutions. So are the so-called micromobility solutions (scooters, ebikes, etc.)

Buses move 40-60 people in the most space-efficient manner, and yet have routes impeded by assholes on slow scooters carrying 1 guy + cargo for treatlers.
One thing I wrote about here is how technology has made buses *way* more convenient while techno-futurists were obsessed with flying taxis and self-driving cars.

1/1/2026 was better than 1/1/2025.

I am thankful for that.

Just 364 more days to go, one day at a time.

Honestly, the biggest deal in NYC is that we have a Mayor who likes the city and its people and *who wants to be Mayor* and isn't badmouthing us to impress five swing voters in Iowa.

Really, Mayors should never think of running for higher office because there truly is no higher office.

Mamdani’s first act as mayor? Announcing the city as an interested party in my slumlord landlord Pinnacle’s bankruptcy auction. (And a slew of executive orders addressing housing!)

I'm going to second this. Weaver is one of the people who helped get the 2019 rent laws passed finally strengthening tenant protections.

It's got to be said that without real tenant protections and enforcement with teeth (put! slumlords! in! prison!), then YIMBY policy is just REBNY policy.
Cea Weaver heading the revived Office to protect tenants is a big deal. Mamdani putting a longtime tenant activist in this seat is in some ways suprising and in other ways, not at all, given what we know about Zohran. Exciting!

First day of a new era for tenants! Mayor Mamdani announces that he’s objecting to the auction of 93 Pinnacle properties, and he’s appointing Cea Weaver to direct the Mayor’s Office of Tenant Protection. I don’t know anyone who will fight harder for tenants! Watch out Pinnacle and other slumlords!
