Interesting question. I think there isn't a "beyond repair" that is useful here. It's not like we can go to the store and get a new one. Most of us have no useful place to relocate to. We're stuck finding a path that leads to something worth evolving towards.
Purely theoretical: if you felt the US were a failed experiment - that it's beyond repair - would you:

1.) keep it to yourself, period;
2.) speak of it only to a trusted private few;
3.) speak freely and publicly of it?

Share this, please. I'd like to see as many answers as possible.

The High Holidays approach. Made it to a Mizrahi Selichot yesterday morning at Temple Beth Zion, Brookline. I love these melodies. No wonder the Sephardic custom is to do a month of this. This cong does only three mornings, a week apart (and not at midnight!) That's enough for moi. #HighHolyDays

In the middle of procrastinating today, I re-organized some shelves. Poetry is more accessible. Found: Poems in Hebrew by a friend from Jerusalem. Tossed: Poems by an acquaintance in Santa Cruz - I never liked them. I miss the days when I wrote & shared writing with friends. Now I post, and move on.

We have a cease-fire, and steps towards an end to current killing, but continue to rush, head-long, towards the next escalation. No rule of law in the territories. Greater polarization, pain, grievance. Jews & Palestinians must find paths to live together. Without that, more wasted destruction.

3/3 In thebaffler.com/latest/the-f... author repeats the usual trendy silliness about Israel as a colonial? settler-colonial? enterprise. Most Jews in Israel didn't come from Europe. No homes outside Israel to return to any more than Palestinians do. No peace w/o mutual recognition of humanity.

2/3 But in thebaffler.com/latest/the-f... the author also whitewashes the atrocities of 10/7 - the murder, the rape, the torture. We have no path to peace or reconciliation with recognizing evil on all sides when there is evil on all sizes. We have no future without that.

1/2 My son shared this article: thebaffler.com/latest/the-f... It's half TRUE - Liberal Zionists (and non-Zionists like me) lacked the courage, in the face of the atrocities of 10/7, to publicly condemn Israel's response - almost 50,000 humans dead in Gaza, most of them civilians.

I'm having one of those odd spillover moments while reading Paul Joyce's book abt Boston gangs in the 1980s, 1990s, "it started with the hats" & post-gang desistance as part of "life-course theory"; & Arlie Hochschild's newish book on Trumpies, "Stolen Pride." Because, well, gangs. #theresistance
