I know it’s stupid and irrational, and a tax on people who don’t understand statistics, but I’ve started to buy lottery tickets on the regular. I can’t explain it.

Today @TheNewYorker released our short documentary “Rovina’s Choice” online.

It traces the ongoing effects of the sudden shutdown of US foreign aid through the story of one mother in Kenya as she seeks to save her daughter from sickness and starvation. 🎥 1/ www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

Here’s what I don’t get about people like Ross Douthat.

I have opinions too. I think they’re good ones. I bet I can back them up better than he can. *And* they’re not grossly offensive opinions. Why can’t I get a job just saying, you know, whatever comes to my mind to a national audience?????

Work sucks etc but they do not want you to be able to support yourself or pursue your dreams; they want you dependent on a man, so he can treat you as badly as he feels like without you having the option to leave.

It’s hip on the left and right alike to hate “liberal feminism” (a term I challenge detractors to define—usually the “liberal” is silent). But the fascists of our moment hate nothing more than the actual liberal feminist ideal: a public sphere where women are equal. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/06/o...

The ADL has decided to treat fascists as allies and progressives as enemies. For a group that is tasked with protecting American Jews, that is a world historic fuck up.

I will never forgive these people for their moral decrepitude.

I want a TV show based on this premise in the mold of Schitt’s creek
I know it won't happen but a part of me I'm not proud of is absolutely fiending for stories of people who lived on the Upper East or Upper West Side of Manhattan, finally realized they were conservatives when Mamdani was elected, and now have to learn how to function in Jacksonville.

Here's another bit of conventional wisdom Zohran completely blew away: His speech was at well above a 10th-grade level. It was complex, erudite, punctuated by deep and fluent references. You don't have to condescend to voters with baby talk! Part of re-establishing norms is speaking like an adult.

5. It Must Not Happen

ah, perhaps instead of pumping millions into endless factional infighting Dem donors could invest in making local Dem organizations genuine civic spaces that can reach people during and between elections

The factional grifters will hate this, but the Mamdani-Spanberger-Sherrill axis actually suggests the outlines of a broad, emerging Dem coalition organized around both anti-Trump *and* affordability politics, not a party bitterly divided against itself.
These big wins will embolden Dems to take on Trump's lawbreaking and show there's a price for GOP enabling of him. Folks hate to hear this, but normal patterns are asserting themselves: Liberalism isn't dead, Rs are likely to lose in 2026, and Trump is really unpopular, not a magical exception.

why is this mayoral election different than all other mayoral elections?

in all other mayoral elections, we get to see andrew cuomo lose but once. but in this mayoral elections, we get to see him lose *twice*.

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.
