I was just blindsided by an entire pitch for my next project that dropped into my lap like it was nobody's business----and damn, this is the kind of creative high you live for, isn't it?

Peacefully languishing on sub a second time while going on sub a third time while starting to write the next thing... and this is really just the way of it, innit? Buckle up and onwards we go! Arctic nautical spec-cy horror, it is! ⚓️👏

Nearly every single Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale is a low-key horror story, but I don't see enough people talking about "The Fir Tree"/"Grantræet". That story has haunted me since childhood, istg, more formative for me than any of his other stories. I still think about it randomly as an adult.

I just finished @danaiwrites.bsky.social's VILE LADY VILLAINS (out next year) and *chomps down on pillow and makes unintelligible noises*.

Thanks. That was all for today. Remember to drink water and prioritize your sleep and don't walk through doors with bloodied handles and broken keys.

Or do...

In all seriousness, publishers are going to have to figure out how to market books in the post-social-media landscape. That should be an implicit part of their job. What authors/artists can do on their own is increasingly limited and siloed.

Being on street teams really is one of my guilty pleasures as a fellow author. I really, really hope that I'll never have to entirely stop that. Really, really, really. There's nothing better than getting to formally support amazing people with amazing brains alongside other amazing people! ✨

So, how do you put the word out there that you'd love to participate in more anthologies?

Because 👉 that's me 👈.

(and some news regarding that may already be happening next year, sooo maybe we could keep that ball rolling?)

Me, 2 days ago: "Okay, I clearly need to do some research on topic X for my book edits and character arc."

Me, today: "Okay, I've listened to 12 hours of podcasting about topic X, so now I just need to squeeze all of this into my story without making it into an essay! Easy, pfffft!"

Agency in historical fiction can be so hard to write, truly. Characters have to work within such constraints. It doesn’t mean they can’t be active, but authors have to straddle that line of honoring the period-typical level of agency while also allowing for active choices within that level. Phew.
