some Oudemansiella species can look like they’re growing right from the soil, but all it takes is determined digging to see that what you’ve got is an iceberg among mushrooms, and it’s growing from buried deadwood sometimes as deep as a 6 inches beneath the surface!

‘bleeding tooth’ fungi i encountered in Oaxaca a couple augusts ago. these mushrooms are know for their blood red guttation, that is, the excess liquid they exude as a metabolic byproduct (like when we sweat!)

lion’s mane. these beautiful saprobes/ weak parasites might be mistaken for a tribble or your cheerleader sibling’s pom pom, but they’re mushies

found last month when i delivered the keynote at Sonoma County Mycological Association’s annual camp!

low-key obsessed that O. sinensis can do both, that is-- live on a plant as an endophyte till it gets munched by its eventual lepidopteran host!🥰

Ophiocordyceps sinensis, the #caterpillar #fungus, has a fascinating dual lifestyle. It is both an #endophytic and #entomopathogenic fungus.

The fungus produces spores that settle on vegetation, and when ghost moth larvae feed on contaminated plant material, the fungus becomes parasitic.
