In the political literature this is known as donating for access. It’s very common. Campaign donations should be interpreted as strategic manifestations of political goals, not expressions of true preference.
Here's a fun thing that a top donor to Andrew Cuomo's super PAC just told me.

If a Democratic president were openly & repeatedly saying that neither the 14th nor the 22nd amendment constrained him, the country would grind to a halt, the NYT & WaPo would have 96-point font front page headline articles, & the Senate impeachment trial would already be underway.
Trump speaking with the troops in Qatar: “As you know we won three elections. And some people want us to do a fourth. I don't know. I'll have to think about that. You saw the new hat?… It says Trump 2028.”

Just sit with this for a minute. The administration is saying that veterans, who served their country in the military, are not *fit* to help serve that country in civil service. What an insult to them and their loyalty to country.
Alina Habba on veterans who have been fired from government jobs: "Perhaps they're not fit to have a job at this moment."

Members of Congress swear an oath to defend the Constitution.
If they are too scared to follow through on that—not unreasonable, many really are getting harassment and death threats—then they should step down so someone who is up for the job can do it.

Of 220m US adults, only 535 are in Congress.
