Brisbane/Meanjin, Queensland, Australia.
International Data Week #IDW2025 is inspiring and terrifying. Data resilience is a tough topic in a world where data is politicised, weaponised, or erased entirely. But great to see a lot of engaged and dedicated professionals across diverse domains.

My first ride on Brisbane Metro. I genuinely wanted to like it more. Because Brisbane needs way better public transport. But it feels cramped, crowded, jerky, and oh so limited in coverage and ambition.

Maybe I’ve been spoiled by my time using Singapore MRT but BNE Metro really is just a fancy bus

I’m guessing that reintroducing turn-on-red isn’t on the list of things to help a vibrant downtown either. *cough* Brisbane *cough*
If your downtown still has many wide and fast one-way streets, then your priority is to move cars as fast as possible thru a weak downtown. It’s NOT to create a vibrant downtown, help downtown retailers, keep people safe, support walkability and accessibility, reduce pollution, etc. #TrafficSewers

The best self-driving transport continue to be driverless trains. Australia needs more of those and less car dependence.

In news that shocks no one, the Queensland LNP cancel-or-downgrade yet another critical public transport project.

It has been months since Brisbane City Council closed the Story Bridge shared paths.
It is time BCC reallocate a small amount of road space to those crossing the bridge on foot and wheels!
Please sign the petition to make it so.

What does it take to get even basic bike path maintenance done in Brisbane?

Reported a month ago post-Alfred and absolute nothing done and no communication.
I'm making our shared spaces better. I used Snap Send Solve to report this issue — check it out.

As far as transport and transit go, the Brisbane 2032 plans are the most pathetic and underwhelming pile of garbage possible. More misuse of the term metro, a scale back of original plans, and nothing visionary or inspiring. We are getting LESS than we had planned before the games.

“Reclaiming the Panama Canal” -DJT Feb 2025

How does one “reclaim” something that is legally owned by Panama? Either theft, extortion, economic blockade, or invasion. Am I missing something?

That is a chillingly imperialist line.

Until today I thought claims that any potential for WW3 were hyperbolic flights of fancy. Now I’m less certain.

What I was expecting even less was the potential for the US and Russia to be allies in a conflict, rather than the primary opponents.

I hope I’m severely overreacting to _that_ meeting.

You know I love a good Venn Diagram. Been seeing this one around lately. Seems to sum up the times.

“See you in court”

More adult replies like this to the flood of childish tantrums would be nice.
TRUMP: The NCAA has complied immediately. That's good. But I understand Maine -- is the governor of Maine here?

JANET MILLS: Yeah I'm here

TRUMP: Are you not gonna comply?

JM: I'm going to comply with state and federal law

T: You better do it bc you're not gonna get any federal funding at all

With the US not being a stable trading partner these days, I assume there a bunch of trade delegations flitting around the globe having conversations along the lines of “we sell a bunch of X to the USA, you buy a bunch of X from the USA. So… shall we art-of-the-deal some X?”

Right? Right??

At this stage I’ll take anything from yellow up. Riding a bike or walking around your city shouldn’t require an act of courage.
There’s only one solution forward to cycling and pedestrians safety

Design out the conflict

To every part of the world of every size having an election soon — Think really carefully before sitting it out, before thinking “they’re all the same,” before letting “the perfect” be the enemy of the rational & competent, and before assuming that “change” won’t end up being an absolute nightmare.
It will take years to repair the damage that Trump and Musk have done in less than two weeks. And it’s going to take a lot of hard work to make sure we even get the chance.

For such a rich country, we treat a significant portion of our population so abysmally.

No excuses for anyone in Aust having to be homeless - it’s just been the default policy position for Govts at all levels

Never forget, if you plan cities for cars and traffic, you get cars and traffic. If you plan cities for people and places, you get people and places.

Plan for the city you want.

2025 is going to be a feast of existential dread.
Our winter of discontent, gave way to a spring of discomfort, and now we are staring at a summer of despair.
