What a fabulous weekend at the Film Noir Fest run by @filmnoiruk.bsky.social! I managed to watch 13 Noir and Crime films on the big screen! Highlights for me were seeing The Asphalt Jungle, Rififi and Gun Crazy on the big screen. And the best new film to me was Plunder Road.

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

It’s the 111th anniversary today of the birth of Harry Rée, who was a teacher and conscientious objector when the Second World War broke out, and by the time it ended, when he was 31, had invented ‘blackmail sabotage’ and got a DSO, an OBE, a Croix de Guerre, and a Medaille de la Resistance

see, *this* is why you need writers who know how to throw an actual gutpunch. this is a good idea and, nothing at all against whoever wrote that headline, but you're not moving the needle with that one. you can do better. *we* can do better. hmu

A little treat for Empire Strikes Back fans: extensive description of Leigh Brackett's contributions to the screenplay, which were substantial, especially in terms of subplots and locations. www.denofgeek.com/movies/star-...

Leigh Brackett's draft for Star Wars II would have produced a very different The Empire Strikes Back.

Had a great time at Secret Cinema Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical today! The cast were all superb and it was all so brilliantly put together - almost no queues at all for food/drink and a great atmosphere and celebration of the film. If you’re on the fence about going then definitely go for it!

I just opened up Bluesky to say the same thing. Terrible obituary for Michael Madsen in the Guardian filled with inaccuracies.
Reservoir Dogs was 1992, not 1994. Pulp Fiction was 2 years later, not 11 years later. Jesus Christ, @theguardian.com, whatever wretched AI rubbish you’re using in place of proper journalists, it ain’t working. Switch it off.

This is great fun if you’re in the UK and looking for something to watch this evening.
Film of the day on @talkingpicturestv.bsky.social; Peter Sellers in The Wrong Arm of the Law at 6pm. If names like Lionel Jeffries, Derek Guyler, Dennis Price, Dick Emery, John Junkin or Nanette Newman mean anything to you, you'll enjoy this 4/5

I remember my first experience of using headphones as a kid, with my mom’s Walkman in the 90s— the music felt “non-diegetic,” like it was coming from nowhere, the score to my life. I fantasized about being in the “opening credits” sequence of my own TV show. It was intoxicating

I went down a rabbit hole.

Looking at Google's search results, the individual film review of Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning that it's given the most prominence to isn't from a big outlet. It's from someone who appears to have written two movie reviews in their life.

The most prominent review of Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning via Google search is, well, something of a mystery.
