Re-intro time. I'm a forensic psychologist & train clinicians doing mental health services w/ people in the legal system. Big into making science accessible & transparent, mentoring w/ kindness, & checking our biases in evaluations.

Also ❤️ food & am thrilled when I get to combine that w/ work!
Nothing feels as perfectly "scientist-practitioner" as testifying on the stand & being very confident about saying "I don't know"

This is a big deal. Approval polls, like the media, courts, and Congress, can serve as vehicles for presidential accountability. We are watching in real time as the institutions that could hold this administration to account wither on the vine.
Gallup announces, after 88 years, it will no longer track public approval of presidents. Trump's second-term approval rating fell to 36% in December, among the lowest ever recorded by the company. The president repeatedly has threatened to sue media and polling firms that portray him negatively.

Thrilled to finally hear one of the voices I’ve been waiting to hear live for far too long: Patty Griffin.

Many have concern about an aging population & increased need for related medical & mental health care. Tomorrow's panel of Law & Mental Health speakers (Lisa Kan, Chriscelyn Tussey, Beth Arredondo) cover this issue in the forensic system. #PsychLaw

RFK Jr. has harmed the US. Most have justifiably focused on what he has sought to destroy, like vaccine access. What he seeks to "build" may be just as harmful. "Great American Recovery" is a return to coerced treatment and departure from evidence-based approaches. See my newest piece in The Hill.

Some paths we see for advancing clinical science's impact:

-Share science w/ other audiences who need it
-Collaborate across fields, institutions, hierarchies
-Call out role of systems & oppression on well-being
-Share leadership (vs. offering it to the same powerful people)
-Quality over quantity

I think it's good for us to always reflect on the things we get invited to & what that might say about us or how we're perceived.

Since joining us at UNM last year, Randy Otto has emphasized concise, approachable writing for courts. He'll discuss principles of forensic report writing in today's Law & Mental Health Series. #PsychLaw

"It grows as it goes" is fully aspirational, almost wishcasting. There's moves in positive directions (universal daycare is huge), and while the Albuquerque City Council looks ready to completely fumble a move away from single-family zoning, the State is poised to make similar rules. Here's hoping.

I once stopped myself from reviewing a grad school application while feet propped up eating cheerios w/ TV in the background bc I remembered my review could affect that and a few other applicants.
This kicker from @nikobowie.bsky.social: “If the public were aware of how much of the deliberations affecting millions of people are made by 27-year-olds after happy hour, they'd be shocked.”

Oh to be alive for those central-right arguments of unjust discrimination to consider anything about the scientist that’s not the science itself. I wonder what life was like back in 2023.

Kai's write up and @cailinmeister.bsky.social's thread do a great job of summarizing our results. Rather than cover them a third time, I thought I'd clarify some misconceptions over our piece and COIS more broadly that keep cropping up scattered across replies. 🧵🧪
One of the issues that has come up again and again in my reporting on misinformation and social media is the massive influence social media companies have on research in the field.

Last night a preprint dropped that tries to get at this with some numbers. My piece in @science.org (and 🧪🧵 coming):
Nearly a third of social media research has undisclosed ties to industry, preprint claims
Industry-linked studies were also more likely to focus on particular topics, suggesting these ties may be skewing the field

Data suggest the salmon chowder was a hit:

1) All adults went for seconds
2) The baby put more in his mouth than on our pants
3) The 4 y/o’s complaint was that hers ran out of salmon
