While searching for something else I stumbled upon this fascinating op-ed from Dec. 2015--ten years ago. It appeared in the Greenville, SC Index-Journal. It matter-of-factly pointed out that Trump was beloved by white nationalists like Jared Taylor. This was BEFORE the first GOP primary was held.

Great. ChatGPT is like another Fox News. So much misinformation. Just what the US needs. Sigh.

Appalling. But no surprise.
The White House’s new national security strategy includes these paragraphs on Europe. They read like a version of the white nationalist great replacement theory, with “migration” threatening to make the “continent…unrecognizable” within two decades.

They came to the US for safety, for decency, for a life without the rape and exploitation of the vulnerable. They came from everywhere. And look what America now offers.

Why is there no "unsend" feature for text messaging? I'd pay for that.

The president has illegally declared war to stop fentanyl trafficking from a country that does not traffic that drug, claiming its leader is trafficking drugs himself, the day after pardoning a former leader of a country who is a convicted drug trafficker.

Inspiring perseverance and refocus.
This is so cool. I interviewed Calvin Duncan - exoneree, and now Orleans Parish Clerk of Court - back in 2023 about his work as a jailhouse lawyer for the folks on death row in Louisiana. I remember being really struck by his words:

As an adult survivor of childhood sex abuse I don't care who is in the files--Democrat, Republican, Socialist, Independent--it doesn't matter. If the Epstein files show that someone is guilty of abusing children, then prosecute them to the fullest. For the victims. #EpsteinFiles #4theVictims #CSA

Here's an important essay about learning how to talk across political divides, which is also good training in how to do ethnographic interviewing. More of us should learn how to open minds, starting with our own. open.substack.com/pub/karintam...

Assessment: competitive authoritarianism forthcoming
Here's a report written by 100s of former members of the US intelligence community, assessing the US now the way that they used to assess other countries to determine their political trajectories. Sober, fact-filled analysis that reaches alarming conclusions. open.substack.com/pub/steadyst...
