Oakmoss growing on a small stick. There are a few other lichen and moss also growing on it and probably some fungi too.

Winter woodland icm

There’s something about bare trees that draws me to this sort of image.

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

A dream of snowdrops

I took my Lensbaby Velvet 56mm to visit the snowdrops at #NationalTrust #Cliveden today.

Not many subjects can cope with the dreamy soft focus this lens brings.

Chiltern hills icm

For #ShareMondays2026 here’s an icm image looking over the Chess valley, under a bright winter sky.

Which came first, the tree or the fence?

Two trunks

I suspect this is the result of hedgelaying in the past as this is on a hedge line. It’s likely that the horizontal part was the original trunk, laid as a barrier. One branch developed into a new trunk, with another regrowing from the base. The rest of the original is gone.

A bright wintry day today.

Some gentle icm used here to capture fields, trees and sky of the Chiltern Hills.

Spring on its way 2?

The first bluebell leaves are poking out from the leaf litter in our local woods. It’ll be another 3 months or so before the flowers are out.

Spring on its way?

I’ve been waiting for the hazel catkins to start opening and this is the first I’ve seen this year.

Another damp winter’s day today.

This is an #icm of a local track.

The pond at a local farm (where we buy our eggs). It was almost dry last summer but has refilled nicely.

The hedge to the left of the pond is where the local sparrow gang hangs out.

Winter hedgeline

I pass this old hedgeline most days. It hasn’t been laid in a long time and the hornbeam have grown back with many twisty trunks.

At its best on a day like today, winter-bare with sunlight beyond.

This is an #icm image, which I think works here.

Not a deer.

I took my 70-300 lens on today’s walk hoping to catch some of the deer that have been hanging out in the local woods. But they weren’t in the usual place and spotted me before I saw them and 3 went bounding away.

But I did get an ok shot of a red kite nearly overhead.

Spot the deer!

There are a few deer (roe and muntjac) in these woods, local to me. One day soon I’m going to take my long lens and try to get some proper photos…

I posted a straight image of this scene on Saturday but I’m going with a monochrome icm version for #ShareMondays2026

Hopefully this has the feel of a blustery winter’s day.
