A landscape oriented abstract image of two rocks in a stream, at least part of two rocks. The one on the left has water pouring over it, turned slightly milky with a few second exposure. The one on the right has a lovely curve to it and lichens growing on it, it also has three icicles. I’m surprised there weren’t more as the temperature was around -4 or 5. Below the rocks is a pool of water that bubbles and boils with the water running in to it.

A landscape oriented image taken this morning on my iPhone, no doubt more from my big camera will follow at some point. The conditions were lovely, with a fresh layer of snow, my first this winter, covering everything. The river Wye flows into the frame in the bottom right corner, the bank covered with frosted reeds runs into the image on the left. Where the river meets the bank there is a layer of ice, a nice touch as it adds another dimension. Across the river on the mid of the top third we see Chatsworth House looking splendid in the winter sun and reflecting into the river. Across the frame from left to right above it are a line of trees and they are topped with blue sky.

In the bottom left corner of the frame is a robin that has just landed in snow, unfortunately it tail didn’t make it into the image. Its beak is wide open making it, to me, to be shouting ‘yikes, this is a bit cold’.

An orange coo for Orange Sunday, a highland cow, which I love. It’s a landscape oriented image with the cow laying fairly central in the frame surrounded by last year’s heather. In front of her is a large tussock of grass, it’s slightly to the left, behind her are the trunks of silver birch trees.

Steam is coming from the funnel and heading off up into the trees and then tracking behind the train, the track is lined either side with ivy clad trees. The train is part if Peak Rail, that runs from Rowsley to Matlock with many enthusiastic volunteers.

An image from our Christmas Day walk on Beeley Moor. It’s landscape oriented and mainly of the sky. It was a wonderful blue and full of some magnificent cloud formations. Just the bottom of the image, less than a third, contains the moorland, it’s bright orange as it glows in the late afternoon sun. Across the centre is a stand of silver birch trees and they are surrounded by bracken, everything a varying degree of orange.

A landscape oriented image taken on a winter day with snow on the ground and fog in the air making for a very minimal scene. I had such a wonderful walk with two of my favourite weather conditions. I’m on a track in the meadows, the bottom two thirds is snow with the markers of one side of the track coming in from the bottom left and running up to the middle of the frame, they’re just little bits of wood and some tussocks of grass. In the top third trees are visible in the fog and flying across them on the right is a flock of small birds adding a little something to the feel of the image.

A landscape oriented image taken in a location known as Beeley Moor on Christmas Day this year (2025). We had a stunning walk with a cold wind but enough sunshine to make up for it. The image is made up of curving layers. The bottom layer is dead bracken, wonderfully orange in its decline. Amongst it on the left we see a rickety wooden fence. Above the bracken is woodland, again orange can be seen here along with green, red and cream, not leaves as these are long gone, rather the burgeoning buds that will form next year’s leaves seen against the trunks and branches. This woodland begins in the bottom left of the frame and works its way across the image to the top right. Above it on the left we see the distant hillside, verdant green fields dotted with trees. Topping it all is a cloudy sky, fortunately light cloud that allowed the sun to come through and light up all this splendid countryside.

A bird feeder in my garden with a visiting finch. It’s gripping onto the edge of the feeder with its wings out and looking around as if to ward off others. My question is this. I have always been a landscape photographer but more and more when I’m out I find myself wishing I could photograph the birds I see when I’m out, but I don’t have a suitable lens. I want to treat myself in the new year but what lens do I need? I have a mirrorless Sony and at the moment my longest lens only goes up to 200mm. I’d thought about a 100 to 400mm and a 2x teleconverter, but then I’ve not read all good things about it, certainly not in conjunction with the teleconverter. Apparently it’s now quite an old lens and results with teleconverter are not good. Also it’s not an internal zoom, maybe not a deal breaker but something to consider. And it’s quite an old lens now, 2017. So do I wait for a new version or do I look at something else? Perhaps even buying a different camera body, Canon or Nikon, whatever second hand, and a lens for that. I’m open to all ideas. Thanks in advance 🦅
