Great new open access paper - “Newly Identified Creeping Strand of the Concord Fault, San Francisco Bay Area”.

I was able to go check out the area with the authors last summer. Super neat!

I've always been fascinated by Earth's interior and how scientists have described their textures. I decided to make my own slice while at @newsela.bsky.social. #geology, #earth, #platetectonics

Funniest way to find out Brighton won. On the train, just after picking up a load of palace fans at Selhurst. “Oh shit”. “Brighton just scored”.
Trying hard to hide my glee 😄

Current situation…. Coffee and mince pie at a local cafe. Also giving pets to a lovely golden retriever who seems like a very good boy

Today’s exciting activities included shouting at silicone sealant around the bath, walking to and from a cafe for coffee and not decorating the Christmas tree. I call it a successful day.

Just to make it clear: this was a strike slip earthquake offshore of Northern California and NOT a subduction type event on the Cascadia subduction zone! So no significant tsunami would be expected.
(I am seeing a lot of posts that say otherwise..) 🧪⚒️
Shallow strike slip M7.0 earthquake off the coast of Northern California. Strong shaking was felt near Eureka.

Tuesday, 10:41-10:44 (don't be late)

Figure: seismic data for 8 concerts in Seattle. Yellow = all seismic energy (music + crowd). Purple = music only.

Nice informative earthquake thread for those that might be interested in how earthquake magnitude is measured.
Did you know that scientists no longer use the Richter Scale to measure earthquake magnitude?

Now, we tend to use the “Moment Magnitude (Mw)” scale, which was built off of the tenets of the Richter scale. 🧪 ⚒️

I read this and then literally seconds after my sister, who is currently in a garden centre, sent me this. I now have to put some sort of description in the alt text, god help me

Good afternoon Albion fans.

I'm launching my book on Wednesday at the Caxton Arms in Brighton (with Mark from @treasonshow.bsky.social), then a signing with Ian Hart and Alan Mullery at the Broadwater in Worthing on Thursday.

Everyone's welcome.

Tell your friends!

This image is anxiety-inducing. Drone pix from Vilhelm Gunnarsson via Vísir shows just how close the lava came to over-topping the defensive berms at the Blue Lagoon, Iceland today.

They were literally in bulldozers moving earth directly next to fast-moving lava to build up the ramparts higher.

Enjoyable game of football this afternoon at the Amex. Brighton making it hard for themselves, but that Fran Kirby winner was perfect. Brighton 3-2 West Ham. Quite jealous of the light aircraft buzzing over the stadium, some great views no doubt. #wsl #bhafc

Since I think I have some #paleontology among my followers: My five-year-old daughter (a big fan of Mary Anning) and I found what looks to us like a fossil tooth on the beach in Brighton, UK. Does anyone know if it is indeed a tooth and, if so, what kind of creature it might have belonged to?
