A different side to galahs. 🪶

Female on the right with red eye; male on the left with black eye. They mate for life, and these two were wonderfully affectionate.

If you have an interest in rural Taiwan, unexpected sights, abandoned buildings, Xander is a great follow!
I went on a 360 km scooter trip around Taichung and Nantou for Mid-Autumn Festival 2023. Here are a few photos I shot along the way, with commentary 🧵

1) The unofficial mascot of Dongshih
2) Dongshih is Johnny Chiang country
3) The former Dongshih railway station
4) A map of captures on this trip

For when words fail us.
I wrote about the compulsion to speak about things we can't change, the confusion between posting and doing, the emptiness of meaning that pushes us to silence, and children facing death in Israel and Gaza: https://theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/speech-and-speechlessness

For years, I've wished for a book I could give my family and friends that introduces Taiwan in an accessible way.

I am proud to announce that Jon Sullivan and I wrote that book.

“Taiwan: A Contest Democracy Under Threat” is available for pre-order now:

Fujii Kaze's latest music video Workin' Hard was shot in Taiwan and features numerous working class scenes from around the country. Taipei streetscapes featured include Qingguang Market and the Huajiang Building. Can you recognize any other locations?

This aligns with my experiences with Threads, Twitter and Bluesky.

I don’t think that Threads will have much of a long-term impact on Bluesky.
Meta's Threads already looks cooked - users are down to 6 minutes a day and traffic is dropping. It's because it lacks any real reason to exist - it's a network that shows a deep and presumptuous contempt for what the user wants to see and do.

Hard to say what the most welcoming country for trans people is, but Taiwan has to be up there. I can’t imagine seeing a billboard for top surgery in America that includes an address!

journalists are (one of) the backbones of social media — having a space for breaking news and real-time communication is incredibly crucial for crises, information dissemination, and more

and sure, political discourse can come along with "scrutiny and negativity," but what isn't political
Direct from Mosseri: they DON’T want to encourage politics and hard news posting on Threads, and the “scrutiny, negativity…or integrity risks that come along with them.”

INSTAGRAM: Walking into a club full of hot people.

THREADS: You can’t see the hot clubbers but each gets 10 seconds to say the most random thing they can think of.

TWITTER: The club kids throw their drinks at you.

BLUESKY: Afterparty at Doug’s place.

I think I’m gonna stick with Bluesky. Who’s with me?

Threads and Twitter can cancel each other in the boxing ring.

Two Twitter features that pushed me over the edge (in addition to the rest):

1. Horrific car crash videos follow on the heels of a cute cat content. No one wants that kind of video reel curation.

2. The tidal wave of AI-related Tweets. “AI is a liar”, “You’re not using AI right,” etc.
