Here's a reintroduction thread because it feels like the right time for one. Here's me, my spousal unit Jennie, and the chef statue at Gelsosomo's pizza in Chesterton, IN. We are NOT a throuple - don't believe every cockamamie rumor you read.
Buying this
"Malort advent calendar" is already such an unhinged concept but every little window just having Malort in it really pushes it over the edge into something transcendently funny

When you go to buy from an individual creator this season please remember the price at checkout (in person or online) is not what they will see reflected in their account

Fees, immediate taxes, and future taxes cut what they would make often in half

We price for that, so please be understanding!

At some point I might just write “what if everybody is wrong?” because there is a chance I believe nobody bothered to work out if any of this would make a profit or, indeed, whether you’d be able to power the data centers themselves
Amazon just sued one of the largest power companies in Oregon after it failed to power up two data center (one without enough power and one with no power at all) campuses that were meant to be ready *in 2021*. Sure hope this isn't an industry wide problem!

Had a terrific weekend at the Ohio Wildlife Rehabilitators Association conference at Deer Creek Lake State Park. David gave a talk on Sunday about our story, what we've learned over the last nine years, and the current challenges facing small art businesses.🐡🎨

I was so nervous about it but folks I fuckin torched Gen AI to this crowd and it felt good
A more serious gripe is how much AI slop I'm seeing - both on shirts attendees are wearing and at other booths

I'm giving a talk tomorrow on "turning passion for nature into an art career" and I wonder how they'll receive the part when I say that AI slop is a real problem

I broke down and put in my earbuds and played Mercyful Fate, I have time before the end of day rush
The neighboring booth is one of those super salesy type booths, lovely folks but I'm hearing their spiel A LOT and they have a digital screen playing video with loud, super twee piano-ukelele-whistling music on an infinite loop. I've just entered hour 8 of this

In the 1890s, Gifford Pinchot — often hailed as America's first serious forest conservationist — went on a quest to make forests that could be tightly controlled. In doing so, Marin Scotten writes, he helped birth both the American suburb and a new age of wildfires.

How the crusade against nature made — and perhaps doomed — American development.

New, on Heat Death! Come for a bit of deep-cut Asher Lore! Stay for nature writer Marin Scotten's excellent dive into suburbia, the history of forest conservation, and the long — and increasingly futile — war against fire!

My employer-provided healthcare plan is increasing by 30% this year (thankfully, that is less than what I'm seeing on the open market) and one of the main reasons they give is "high-cost specialty treatments received by spouses" which just seems like *quite* a thing to write

I wasn't that excited about this stock standard photo of a darkling beetle (Eleodes goryi), until I noticed the parasitic tachinid fly egg attached above the insect's midleg. This beetle is on borrowed time.
