He / Him. Husband, lover of nature, and disillusioned techie. New Englander in Tennessee. I make acceptable photographs and craft mediocre prose. All opinions belong to your mom.

Zero tolerance for Gen AI.

This morning I've walked 4+ miles on the treadmill, tidied up wires on my home office work desk (while once again singing the praises of Velcro zip ties), and experimented more with editing photos in darktable.

Toying with maybe taking rainy day photos somewhere this afternoon.

I don't know why anyone would tolerate the obnoxious mess that is MS Outlook for personal email. (Work may be a different matter.)

Thunderbird gets out of the way when you want to read or send messages, and it's customizable in terms of appearance and plugins. #Thunderbird

This was my last picture on the trip - with my tripod in the middle of the street at some ungodly hour with the local patrol looking at me like a harmless gringo madman. Taken with the Mamiya 7 and HP5 and cropped into a panoramic.

It's doubtful that the author with 32k followers who just followed me truly wants to interact or hear my views on anything.

We went hiking at Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest on the morning of New Year's Eve.
Morning Hike at Joyce Kilmer
We hiked the loops at the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest on New Year's Eve. I hadn't been there in about 16 years, and this was my wife's first visit. Fortunately, we'd both layered up because it was re...

A Full Spectrum Conversion That Went Wrong, Or: How I  Killed A Kodak Charmera
Unusually, I'm going to start this post off with a disclaimer and a warning. If you try to follow these guidelines to make a Charmera full-spectrum and kill the camera, like I did, it's not my fault. This was my experience and it kind of worked, and then it didn't. Also, and I'll get this out at the start: always  make sure that the microSD card is removed from the camera.

This sounds like a promising tool. I've used ShutUp10 for years to do many of the same things, but this might be worth checking out.

Microsoft is determined to drive me from Windows on my last non-Linux PC.

It appears they have disabled access to whatever database Media Player uses to pull album info on Windows 11. I've been ripping tracks to FLAC for years using MP.

I'm interested if others find this to be the case. #Microsoft

Cheap DVDs at McKay's, a massive used bookstore in Knoxville. They do a brisk business buying and reselling all sorts of media.

Shot surreptitiously using my 4MP Konica DiMAGE G400 camera, so as to avoid making paranoid employees "concerned." Edits in darktable. #ShittyCameraChallenge

One of my favourite buildings to photograph was recently torn down, so this week is a little tribute series. The photos are from a few years ago. Gonna miss that warm light.

I never authorized Microsoft to convert my emoticons to emojis in Teams or Outlook.

I'd look for a setting to disable that "feature," but there's a strong likelihood it would get converted by the receiver's software regardless of my wishes. :'( #OldManYellsAtCloud

A friendly reminder: If you want people to follow you back on Bluesky (or any other platform, for that matter), you need to provide some indication of your interests in your profile.

If yours is empty, or only contains a vague quote, it's unlikely I'm going to follow you. Give us reasons.

A bit of good news today: After weeks of being out, Aldi finally had my cookie dough protein bars in stock today. It isn't quite enough to take the edge off the authoritarian news cycle of doom, but they're pretty good. I bought 3 boxes.
