I've never won a World Cup but I'd imagine it feels something like when your favorite team signs two 24-year-old MLS Roster Guys to bring their total squad size up to 20 players (16 field players) 2.5 weeks before the season begins.

"Why don't Americans like soccer?" maybe because shit like this was being published by big-name writers in major mainstream outlets as recently as 2008.
it's not really fair to point to klosterman's writing from 20 years ago to better understand his position on sports but i can't just leave the phrase "soccer is the sports equivalent of abortion" on the table here
