The Washington Wizards doing this within hours of the Washington Post killing its sports section is one an ever-increasing list of "would have been rejected in the writers room" things that actually happened.
BREAKING: The Dallas Mavericks are trading 10-time NBA All-Star Anthony Davis, Jaden Hardy, D'Angelo Russell and Dante Exum to the Washington Wizards for Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, Marvin Bagley III, 2 first-round picks and 3 second-rounders, sources tell ESPN.

Mauricio Pochettino and his USMNT ended 2025 on a soaring high. Last week, he kicked off a World Cup year with a faceplant.

Pochettino's public criticism of a senior player was unnecessary, ill informed and out of touch.

"under my leadership, our newspaper has lost readers and subscribers at record rates. this shows that I was correct about what was wrong with the newspaper."
Notable bits from this email:
- WaPo search has declined by half in three years
- Daily story output has "substantially fallen" in the last five years
- Murray argues: "we too often write from one perspective, for one slice of the audience."

sports coverage is not about box scores anymore. it's about power and politics and corruption and sovereign wealth and real estate and the use of taxpayer money and the most publicized labor disputes in the country and yes, sometimes about ball go in hoop
WaPo's Matt Murray told staff the paper is shuttering sports, moving remaining staff to features, shrinking foreign coverage, restructuring metro, closing books coverage, suspending Post Reports podcast

Deleted a post about “what’s your least favorite song” because the vibes are bad enough already.

Instead: what’s your favorite song that has a long title, say at least 6 words long?

Mine: “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” (Pearl Jam)

"Why don't Americans like soccer?" maybe because shit like this was being published by big-name writers in major mainstream outlets as recently as 2008.
it's not really fair to point to klosterman's writing from 20 years ago to better understand his position on sports but i can't just leave the phrase "soccer is the sports equivalent of abortion" on the table here
