talking to #alevelmaths teaching colleagues across the region we think there has been a drop off in Ss asking for help from teachers, suspect they turn to AI instead

In #mathstoday (yesterday really, but forgot to post) year 12 did this simultaneous equations loop from the maths association. Great levels of challenge and discussion.

A friend of mine has just launched this website that I think is pretty great for generating quick starters for A-Level maths and he has started adding some questions for Further Maths too.

It's really interesting how covering up one part of the question suddenly causes the student to figure out what it is asking.
Covered up the bearing lines and asked again and suddenly 'oh Pythagoras '

In 1965, the mathematician Sarvadaman Chowla wanted to know how small an extremely simple type of Fourier transform — a sum of cosine waves — could get. His problem sounded straightforward. But somehow, it wasn’t.

Mathematicians are still trying to understand fundamental properties of the Fourier transform, one of their most ubiquitous and powerful tools. A new result marks an exciting advance toward that goal.

Maths teachers- can I ask how much curriculum time per week do your Y10 and Y11 classes get?
Thank you!

I would love it if the next iterations of the #ALevelMaths specifications ditched the awful notation of writing fg(x) for f(g(x))

Even with a background in mathematics, it still surprises me just how how often π (pi) shows up in expressions for integrals, infinite sums, probabilities--the list is long.

Here is another famous way of estimating π (pi) experimentally, by dropping sticks, knows as "Buffon's Needle" problem.
Estimate Pi by Dropping Sticks
A simulator based on one of the oldest problems in geometrical probability approximates pi.
