Fascinating & unexpected from the Rodriguez lab on cell competition acting as a nutrient sensor

Winner cells increase L-Proline uptake in losers, repressing their survival pathway (ISR) to kill them

Explains old observations that starvation prevents competition

www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Sensing of extracellular L-Proline availability by the integrated stress response determines the outcome of cell competition.
Cell competition is a quality control acting from development to the adult that eliminates cells that are less-fit than their neighbours. How winner cells induce the elimination of losers during this ...

I really admire the confidence of the student (not mine) who emailed me at 2:58 AM with the subject line “help” asking for the page numbers in my book where I talk about different racial classification systems. They said “IM CITING THIS FOR MY ASSIGNMENT“ and are stressed.

And yes, I replied.

There is nothing wrong with trying to find a social media platform that connects you with people who share similar values to you. This is not a desire for an echo chamber. It is desire for a community.

This from @jonathanecollins.bsky.social looks great. Folks support teaching core ideas from Critial Race Theory—that racism is structural (and bad)—but oppose teaching “CRT” because policy makers tarnished the brand.

This has broad implications beyond the case.

As a PhD student, make sure to set aside time regularly to build your network, whether through conferences, ResearchGate, or emailing others in your field.

Because there’s a good chance that the job you get after your PhD will come through your network.
