Several people have commented about Ancestry's updated #DNA ethnicity estimates over the past 24 hours. I've written a short blog post about how mine have changed. To sum up: more Dutch, no longer Scottish. I also stand in solidarity with the people of #Yorkshire!

Sorry to have missed #GenHour, but I’ve spent a lovely evening with @fhsofcheshire.bsky.social at their quiz evening. Zoom breakout rooms for each team brilliantly organised by @researchdogsbody.bsky.social.

This is deeply worrying news from the world of FGG (ForensicGeneticGenealogy).

There are so many useful resources for #FamilyHistory and #OnePlaceStudies on the IHR website.

Just don’t blame me if you lose an hour or two having a good look around. 😉😊

I’m very much looking forward to this later!
🧠✨ Quiz Night Alert! Tonight's the night! ✨🧠

No homework required or specialist knowledge needed, just bring yourself, your sense of humour, and perhaps a cup of tea, or something stronger 👀

Looking forward to a fun, friendly evening of quizzing, chuckles, and “oh no!” moments! 🎉

@fourteeneighteen.co.uk has encouraged me to ‘drop an album that was important to you when you were nineteen’. I give you the Hothouse Flowers’ debut album from 1988. I saw them play live at university several times, and at Glastonbury. I still listen to them now.

A single sentence in a funeral write-up that changes your perspective on a particular ancestor: “in his youth he emigrated to Australia, and was one of the first in the rush for the gold fields.” 😱 #FamilyHistory

I’ve finally finished my latest family group on Mr H’s tree: a set of 2xGGP and their *14* children. One died in infancy, one emigrated to Texas and married a cattle rancher. Two, and the husband of another, most likely took their own lives. The newspaper accounts are not straightforward.

I have a candidate for the worst transcription ever. I give you the Maud Whittaker’s entry for 1909 in the New Orleans US Passenger Lists 1813-1963 on Ancestry.

Father: Mr Mathither (Mr Whittaker)
Address: Lu Faene NY Bembry Chehen … or perhaps Lea Farm, Wybunbury, Cheshire.

No flowers, chocolates or cards here; the menfolk are on their way to Murrayfield in Edinburgh to watch the #SixNations. I have my loyal and trusty research assistant though. #FamilyHistory

Apologies for being so late joining #GenHour tonight. I’ve been watching this film about the #ForestOfDean back in the 1960s. It’s presented by Dennis Potter (the screenwriter) who grew up there. So much social history, uncomfortable observations / opinions and more.

My mind is well and truly blown by the amazing talk given by @genealcymru.bsky.social to @gloucestershirefhs.bsky.social this evening. So much to reflect on, and I need to revisit some of my research strategies as a result. Don’t ignore the ivy around the tree. 😊

Well that’s a first for me - bequeathing one’s yacht in a Will. 😊

I ordered the will of someone who owned many of the coal mines in the #ForestOfDean; my ancestors’ employer who *might* have been the father of one. Seeing if there are any clues …

My childhood food memories are similar to Natalie’s.

I also recall being at a drinks party with my parents, hosted by some university academics (who seemed very sophisticated to me). I complained that the squashed blackberries with cream on the little biscuits tasted of fish. It was caviar! 🤣
