Last year I wrote a collection of pen portraits of those in my family tree who lost their lives in wartime. Sharing here, along with photos taken in Whitehall yesterday.

Goodness - I remember going there as a child! This photo was taken at Hilton maze in summer 1974 - I’m the cheeky one on the right. My sister is the grumpy-looking baby.

#31DaysOfGraves day 30 - colour. This slightly out-of-focus picture is the grave of my parents-in-law. Back in the spring I transplanted some autumn-flowering cyclamens from my garden, and here’s one in flower. The plants originally came from their garden, so it seemed an appropriate addition.

#31DaysOfGraves day 29 - #Occupations. This is the grave of my 3xGGF Joseph Entwistle, his 3rd wife Sarah Swinden and 2nd wife Mary Ward. Joseph is described as “joiner of this town” and “maker of 6,600 coffins”. Edgerton Cemetery, #Huddersfield.

Happy memories of 3 years ago, a day after returning from France. Sadly I can’t recreate this al fresco lunch because (a) it’s pouring with rain today and, more importantly, (b) bringing meat and dairy products into the country is currently banned.
A garden table set for lunch. The plate includes fresh bread, Camembert cheese, pork rillettes, celeriac remoulade and cornichons. All served with a bottle of chilled beer.

#31DaysOfGraves day 28 - #Column. This is the grave of Golding Bird (1814-1854), an eminent physician, who was buried in Woodbury Park Cemetery in Tunbridge Wells.
A gravestone in the form of a pillar, wreathed in garlands of flowers. The top of the pillar is rough and irregular, symbolising a life cut off in its prime.

#31DaysOfGraves - day 26, #Figure. I’m returning to Charminster in Dorset for this one. Here’s the memorial to Grace Pole, who died in 1638, which was erected by her father, Thomas Trenchard. She left no surviving children, with two sons dying in infancy.

#31DaysOfGraves - day 25 - #GravesideOrnament. This is another grave from nearby Pembury in Kent. There’s a small part of the cemetery set aside for the burial of people from traveller families, and this is one of the graves.
A flamboyant grave. At the back is a stone with a detailed inscription of the family. This is topped by a polished black marble oval with an etched photo of two people. This, in turn, is flanked by two horses on their hind legs. In front, the square memorial has a large urn with artificial flowers on each corner. Other items include a carved open book, a traveller’s caravan, a cross and a dove.

Day 24 of #31DaysOfGraves and the theme is #Animal. Here’s a picture taken in Woodbury Park Cemetery, a lovely little Victorian cemetery (or mortuary garden) close to where I live.

It’s a rare day I can persuade anyone to join me to visit an art gallery, but you can get away with such things on your birthday. 😉 We went to see the new #Ravilious exhibition at the #TownerGallery in Eastbourne. Lots of works by his wife Tirzah Garwood and friends such as John Piper too.

It was all going so well ... 🤦 I thought I'd do a little more research into John Clark, whose gravestone I posted earlier. If anyone is up for a challenge 😂 then it's the parish of Charminster in Dorset, which can be found on Ancestry. I can't immediately locate Bishop's Transcripts.
