My 8yo has been struggling with reading, likely dyslexia. Books she can read are dull, so my OH has been reading The Hobbit to her for a few months. She's been absolutely mesmerised, hanging on every word.
They finished it yesterday then watched the final film and now she's devastated it's over.

I spotted this GS Woodpecker on the peanut feeder in the garden, while doing the dishes. I grabbed my phone and quickly managed to capture this. The neighbouring tree it used to live in was chopped down a couple of years ago, so I'm glad it's returned.

Saving them from the compost heap, I have now made a batch of @rivercottage.bsky.social spiced red cabbage and carrot kraut and white cabbage and caraway kraut.

Obligatory past-Xmas fridge clear out has unearthed a number of crusty cheeses, elderly condiments and 2 surplus to requirement cabbages.

It was an excellent, but bone-rattlingly cold day, to visit the beach today. Several clearly insane kite surfers were braving the new years sub-zero temperatures and breakers off N.Berwick beach. Not a great day for shells or treasure though.
