Hello macroeconomists - is this a book worth reading please? (And if not pls suggest me a book - I’m only feeling non fiction at the moment)

Was very disappointed that @pjvogt.bsky.social ‘s search engine pod featured Oster in the most recent episode. People need to stop asking her for opinions outside of her expertise. PJ no!
So many academics in econ & public policy worship Emily Oster. She is a darling of the "popularizing" "evidence-based" social science. And she has made a mint doing it.

Serious public health folks I know are mostly horrified at the damage she has done to public health.
emily oster joining bari weiss’s right wing propaganda project absolutely checks out.

Every reputable expert I know considers mRNA vaccine technology to be one of the most revolutionary advances in medicine in our lifetimes. Its inventors won the Nobel Prize in 2023. Shutting it down now is pointless self-harm to humanity.
Release from HHS: HHS will wind down its development of the mRNA vaccine development activities under the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

Hulett suggesting that the AEC was somehow influenced w/r/t number of counting tables today to disadvantage her specifically. Pretty rank, in my opinion.

I could not agree with this more. Some of the work I have seen “delivered” by the big 4 make me furious.

At my department, our team all put in to get a Nespresso machine and we bring our own pods and milk.
I feel like people seething in their jocks about public service waste are mistakenly projecting their own experience of work on to institutions.

It’s completely different. The public service is an austere environment. There is no fridge that unlocks on Friday arvo so you can get on the beers.

This is excellent but SO grim
Coded up a little app so you can see if your document contains any of the MAGA trigger words ("diversity", etc.). Hopefully it makes proposal writing a little easier. Built with #Quarto, #rshiny, #shinylive, #Rstats, and rage.

I enjoyed this discussion a lot, particularly the gender pay gap section.
Episode 37: Of Boys And Men

Conservatives say American masculinity is under attack from a cancerous, mendacious progressive movement. Centrists say the same thing, but more politely.

This is actually really easy to do in R.
Being able to drop a quarterly US GDP prediction by 5.1% from +2.3% to -2.8% in a single week is one of the most impressive economic developments in the history of the world.
