PhD opportunity!

Focusing on ecological processes offers an adaptive approach to conservation at a time of rapid environmental change

But how do we measure & conserve these processes?

This PhD will explore the use of species traits to assess ecosystem condition

The last @landscaperesearch.bsky.social meet up was a rare event where group size & make up enabled a proper conversation started by @frankrennie.bsky.social around his remarkable book: Among the Layers of the Land. A thoughtful, deep time story of place in alternating factual & fictional chapters.

As the debate on the Land Reform Bill continues, one thing is clear: in its current form the Bill does not meet the scale of the challenges we face.

Here @lmacfarlane.bsky.social gives evidence at the Net Zero, Energy & Transport Committee on why it needs significant amendments.

Yet again seen a paper in a high impact journal which does not cite highly relevant literature

This shows that any paper is a work created by the authors whose findings must be assessed alongside the rest of the literature

and that no single paper alone should be used to support an argument

The improvised response at 2:08 is remarkable.

No one in the political life of the UK is anywhere near as impressive as this … or as threatening.
She called out world leaders for sitting by and watching a live-streamed genocide without taking action.

@frankrennie.bsky.social @alastairmci.bsky.social I'm "helping" to plan a special trip to Lewis and Harris next year with my school friends to mark our 70th, any hints for the best time, places to visit etc?

An excellent article in The Crofter by Frank Rennie @frankrennie.bsky.social As well, I did enjoy the remark about the hedge funders who wouldn't recognise a Texel tup from a tractor 👌

By way of context, Grangemouth’s closure was 400 direct job losses.

1800 is … a lot.
In all truth, I cannot tell you what it will mean to cut 1,800 people from the university because there is simply a lack of information or accountability. But, staff and students did not get us here (wherever we are!?) and don't deserve to pay with the careers or quality of education.

1/2 I'm reminded of the "Tree of Life". In the Eden, the tree is ambiguous. It is perhaps a survival of the ritual poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah. The Yahwehist writer couldn't give the goddess her due. In Proverbs however, the Tree of Life returns as a symbol of feminine life-giving wisdom.

Research does not exist unless it is published

And peer reviewed rather than reports or blogs

People need to see the outcomes of research in the public domain

This is not publish or perish. It is publish or squander
