Cynical optimist. I'm just here to post shower-thoughts, weird facts I've just learned (but have nobody specific to share them with), and other irreverent bullcrap. 🇦🇺 Nature lover and tree-hugger proudly hailing from Melbourne, Australia.
Still relevant in 2026 as it was five years ago.

The other night I dreamt there was an R-rated remake of Captain Planet for the 2020s, with gore and swearing and everything, targeting the millennials like myself who grew up with that show.

NGL, I'd probably watch the shit out of that, provided it kept the hand-drawn, celluloid animation style.

TIL that "ACAB" in hexadecimal is a prime number (44,203).

So not only are all cops bastards, they're only divisible by themselves (or something).

I misread one of Bluesky's trending topics, "NFL coaching changes" as "NFT coaching changes".

I'm not sure what that would look like, but I laughed my arse off anyway.

There's a key on the table in our backyard. Nobody knows where it came from, what it opens, or when it appeared. All we know is it was likely "gifted" to us by the neighbourhood magpies as thanks for the frequent feeds they cheekily solicit, as they've been known to do with other random objects.

YAML is my favourite esolang.

In all seriousness though, this format needs to die.
The yaml document from hell
As a data format, yaml is extremely complicated and it has many footguns. In this post I explain some of those pitfalls by means of an example, and I suggest a few simpler and safer yaml alternatives.

Mark Zuckerberg is frequently likened to a lizard, but as anybody who's ever owned a bearded dragon can attest, lizards have personality.

IMHO Zuck's species is more closely related to arachnids. Those glassy, soulless eyes, and that vast, inescapable web he ensnares you in before he sucks you dry…

So a temperature of 41 °C is forecast for tomorrow. Fire warnings abound in Victoria. Nice and toasty.

For the Yanks, that temperature is roughly 106 °F(ucked).

Got an e-mail from Google titled "You’re now using Gemini on web" (because I think I visited their "gemini." subdomain by accident or something). When I went to disable it and delete whatever it considered my "prior usage", I was presented with this absolute gold nugget of user interface design. 🏆

Websites that allow users to toggle between colour motifs with a setting like…

1. Light mode
2. Dark mode
3. Use system's current mode

… have absolutely no business making Light Mode the default, instead of the obvious choice of honouring the system's current motif (choice 3).

It's baffling. 😒

This tool has saved my arse so many times whenever I've needed to lookup Unicode symbols by their rough shape, rather than name.

Sharing it for the benefit of anybody who doesn't yet have it bookmarked:

I always thought that acids, you know, corroded stuff. Not set things on fire and blow up potato chips with enough force to punch a hole through porcelain…

Excel formulas are a Turing-complete programming language, yet it has no (canonical) name. Is it named "Excel"? If so, does the name hold when the language is implemented by OpenOffice? Or Apple's "Numbers" app?

This would shit me more if I actually worked with spreadsheet software.
