Cynical optimist. I'm just here to post shower-thoughts, weird facts I've just learned (but have nobody specific to share them with), and other irreverent bullcrap. 🇦🇺 Nature lover and tree-hugger proudly hailing from Melbourne, Australia.
Of all the parallels between Nazi Germany and the Trump administration, returning to an older typeface more reminiscent of a "better" period in history wasn't what I was expecting.

Cue the MAGA loyalists 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 online instead of 𝔴𝔯𝔦𝔱𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔩𝔦𝔨𝔢 𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔰, because serif is the new blackletter.

Sooooo… I just completed my first (unnecessary) online age verification to prove I'm an adult.

Which could've been made easier by asking me "Is the word 'cringe' a verb or an adjective?", and answering to the former would unambiguously mark me as an Internet user with a fully-formed frontal lobe. 🙄

Having another one of those phases where both the online and offline worlds suck and my instinctive response is to delete my social media profiles and withdraw from the world.

So if I disappear from Bluesky, that'll be what's happened. Just a heads up for the literally zero people reading this. :-)

I can't believe Halle Berry is 59, holy shit.

She's aged like a fine, athletic wine.

Does that make me weird?

GitHub's experiencing server issues?

This is why I keep local mirrors of just about everything I depend on, both on a hard-drive and on my MacBook.

Elon Musk is so uncreative he probably poached his design for the Cybertruck from a fingerpainting drawn by one of his countless children. The car already looks like something a child would've drawn with crayons or KidPix, and since he doesn't need to credit a child it would've been easy plagiarism.

My worst nightmare is waking up in Sam Altman's body and being unable to move my eyebrows or speak clearly, my face a death mask of perpetual confusion and suppressed remorse and my every scream a croaky, stammering dribble of nonsense techbrobabble.

Holy fucking shit, I didn't even know it was possible to do that.

Why isn't the ENTIRE WORLD ALREADY DOING THIS?

Version control systems that aren't Git scare the shit out of me.

Any time I have to use SVN (or worse, CVS), I feel a physical sense of disorientation caused by every subcommand doing something or being named something different to its Git equivalent.

I can't be the only dev who feels this way… 😫

Ever wondered how cool it'd be if we pumped enough oxygen into Uranus that we could ignore the flammable methane that would set an entire planet on fire?

Damn thing would go up like a giant cotton-ball.

More websites need to offer publicly-available database dumps like these:
datasets.imdbws.com
dumps.wikimedia.org
discogs.com/data
musicbrainz.org/doc/MusicBra...

Redundancy is the key to data preservation, and I ain't waiting until AWS carks it again to find myself needing data on an offline site.

Images embedded in MP3 files can optionally be identified by a byte that describes what sort of picture it is (front cover, back cover, leaflet scan, etc). The ID3 specification defines the 18th type as "A bright coloured fish" and completely refuses to elaborate.

… as you do, I suppose.

Heard a lyrebird while out in the bush (though I couldn't see it). I decided to play the Seinfeld theme from my phone a few times in the hopes of reifying a 17-year old meme by teaching it some culture.

Trump commuting Santos isn't the same as Santos commuting Trump.

So it really isn't a commutative operation.
