It's rare for a police officer in Canada to be criminally charged for shooting someone, and then to plead guilty

Andrew Davis shot Devon Fowlin in 2023 and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced on Friday: no jail time and one year of probation

Israel kills 33 Gazans in a single night. It's part of a new deadly status quo, Palestinians say.
On Wednesday, Israel killed 33 Palestinians, including 12 children, in its latest violations of the Gaza ceasefire.

Super important thread. 👇🏻
I know people are closely following what's going on the US and the horrors of ICE, but do you know how Canada is quickly and quietly is growing its deportation machinery?

Canada plans to increase deportations by 25 percent over the next two years. 25 PERCENT!!!

Here are 5 other things to know:

I think there are a lotta people who think the system #alberta is now trying to get through will be better for “them” personally. Private and for profit healthcare has to prioritize one thing only. Profits. The service isn’t better. The care isn’t better. It usually gets worse and more expensive
I want every Canadian on here to read this 🧵 I can’t believe some of the shit I hear from y’all about healthcare. The out-of-pocket costs will bankrupt you. So I encourage every Canadian who thinks it’s better down there to move to the U.S. and experience if a private system gives better care

Who's next?

Now that the notwithstanding clause has become a routine policymaking tool for the UCP, we need to look ahead to their next targets.

This month's AGM will provide clues.

Haven’t heard much about a general strike in at least a week?

Cower we all will, with union leadership in tow.

But good job on that strongly worded letter you sent.

The fascists will use it to wipe their asses.
I can’t say any of the things I want to say without risking being arrested.
I am fucking livid.
Fuck the ATA leadership for running and hiding when the opportunity was there to take these UCP fuckers down.
And fuck everyone who said that calling the UCP fascists was an over-reaction.

To protect Alberta children, the UCP is removing their human rights and the ability of their parents, teachers, and physicians to protect them.

The UCP knows best.

This is a classic populist trope.

Open AI is a pestilence in so many ways.
Capitalism’s culture of speed, profit, war and surveillance is not conducive to careful development of such technology.

This is a tragic story.

Nothing has convinced me that AI is helpful to the majority of what social sciences & humanities students & researchers do. I see deep damage in relation to research skills, critical thinking, & writing.
The tools are being created to replace us.
They are awful for the earth.
Why participate?
