The elections just keep on coming!

Our two by-election candidates – Cllr Daniel Ennis and Míde Nic Fhionnlaoich are incredible advocates for their constituencies, and would make amazing TDs.

The Social Democrats are proud and excited to be contesting these elections with such excellent candidates.

Who would have guessed that powerful people see mindless scrolling, celebrity infatuation, reality TV, and even sports are a distraction for the masses much like Roman gladiators and similar entertainment were?

We go crazy with a lot of it, but we'd also go crazy without it.
This is bleak: Jes Staley, currently CEO of Barclays, reassuring Epstein that popular revolt against financial elites is unlikely because capitalism and pop culture have defanged social movements, leaving people more invested in consumption than justice.

As we head into our biggest conference yet this weekend, the Social Democrats have real momentum.

We’re a growing party with a strong vision for a prosperous, fair and equal Ireland, and a solid plan to get us there.

The potential is enormous.

We’re in a housing emergency because we’re not building enough affordable homes.

It’s time for a State Construction Company, and the Social Democrats have a plan to make it happen.

Public homes, public jobs, real delivery - just like we did before.

This year, I'm hoping to allocate funds to improve & enhance teen play facilities (teen spaces) in Knocknacarra & Salthill, and fund a bike shelter at cappagh park. I'd also like to work with my 5 colleagues to fund a larger, more impactful project that would benefit all our communities & the city.
January 19, 2026 at 9:21 PM
Last year my allocation was spent on accessibility improvements at Cappagh Park, and the new path at McGraths Field. A sum of money was also spent on repainting blue badge parking bays. Finally, permanent 5 a side goals in Salthill Park funded by this scheme will be installed in the coming weeks.

Our annual Local Improvement Scheme allocation of €30,000 can now be submitted to the council for review. Every councillor receives that sum for local improvements in their community. While I have a few projects in mind for 2026, please send any suggestions to alan.curran@cgcc.ie.

Contract finalised to link the footpath on Ballymoneen Road lower. Work should commence shortly. Thanks to Patrick Greene, Director of Services, who worked with me in positive and respectful engagement with the landowner. Small win, but these are so important for making our communities safer for all.

Really thought-provoking piece. I could sit with this article and apply its thinking to so many area that I've worked on from a policy perspective - transport systems, Town Centres First approach, language communities and more. Well worth a Sunday read.
