Defined by Damnation Preview
Chapter One – Overture All members of the Duralaans nobility were aware of the Tale of the Ten Kings. Cecilia herself had been told and retold the tale countless times over the seventeen year…

I am not somebody who leaves a book unfinished in general. If I'm reading something, it means the premise already interests me, and from that point I will finish it before judging it.
Even the worst books I've read have had brief moments that I've enjoyed.
#SFFChat Q2: If an opening doesn't immediately hook you, do you read on just in case? How long do you give a book?

Discuss!

How does your character feel about children?

Do they like children? Are they children? Do they plan to have them someday? Have them already? Adopt? Not interested at all?

Chapter 6 is done, and I'm really happy with this one, even if that's just the thrill of finishing another big chapter talking.
I'm through with introductions now, so I'm excited to get into the real meat of act 1.

I present: the closest thing to a meet cute possible within Avandoras.
(And I'm afraid locked is the closest we have to lock today)

There are so many things that have inspired me throughout sculpting this world. I think no small amount of credit should go to my players from the DnD campaign that Avandoras was created for, but before all of that were two pieces of media.
(cont.)
Good morning #JanuaryWorldbuilders! A very broad question that I have no doubt is difficult to answer: What was YOUR beginning of worldbuilding? What was your inspiration? Your initial spark? Another work of fiction? Boredom? A powerful imagination seeking an outlet?

#AwesomeCharacters
But if a tough one because I don't have a single MC, rather the POV torch is passed between a number of characters. Among them, the closest to being a deuteragonist would be Oedon. He remains central, but treads the line between main and supporting.
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

Does your story have a deuteragonist? A person of significant importance, but less than your MC?

Perhaps a love interest, confidant, or sidekick?

What are they like and how do they relate to your MC?

#JanuaryWorldbuilders
To counterbalance reality's preferential treatment of the ambitious risk-takers, is quite literal divine intervention.
The Gods play favourites and will typically back those with noble intent over the malignant. Whether they simply offer boons or knowledge...
#JanuaryWorldbuilders Opposite of yesterday's prompt! What's something in your worldbuilding that helps your MC (or another important character)? Do they have useful magic? A helpful critter companion? Are their clothes or weapons useful for getting around in their world?
January 6, 2026 at 9:01 AM
Even in fantasy, few can escape the clutches of monotonous labour.

#JanuaryWorldbuilders 5
Reality itself has been structured in a way that benefits those who constantly evolves and punishes the people who remain stagnant for too long.
Hey there, #JanuaryWorldbuilders! We're introducing our worlds this week. Tell me about some aspect of your worldbuilding which is a problem for your characters. Is their world infested with monsters? A dystopian government? Or maybe you created a bug that bites them in their sleep?

Oedon wants to save the world from fate itself, naturally, such grand desires offer grand obstacles. There are a number of means he hopes to achieve this through, but the last hope is one that will undo him.
This is something he keeps entirely to himself.
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

Let’s talk about dangerous goals and ambitions.

Do any of your characters wish for something that would destroy/hurt them if they actually got it?

Do they know this? Do the people around them?

#FantasyIndiesJanuary Day 4
As Marigold begins to uncover the deceptions she has been faced with, she realises that she will only ever uncover her own identity by directly facing it. Her goal is to learn what fate has in store for her and decide whether or not she will comply.

#JanuaryWorldbuilders 4
Not a place or a specific entity, but an idea. The notion of cause and effect, and the fact that the Gods might have some sway over the matter is a notion that terrifies many in Avandoras. The idea that a person's suffering might just be the ripple the Gods made to one day--
#JanuaryWorldbuilders, good morning! In the same vein as yesterday's question, what's something terrifying or scary in your world? Do you have any haunted places? Desolate, lonely places? Any site where something dreadful happened?
January 4, 2026 at 5:49 AM
#AwesomeCharacters
I think this would be either Cassidy or Amor, I'm leaning towards Amor because I Cassidy is a little too central to be a side character.
Amor serves as Cecilia chief side, being inherited from her father before her. He has faithfully served the royal family for much of his life--
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

I had several requests for more side character questions! So, let’s talk about the first side character your MC meets on page.

Are they friend or foe? A stranger? Do they stick around or are they fleeting?

"This story is not my own, I am merely the only one left to tell it.
As a human, this leaves me open to misinterpret some events. I have only my own perspective to fully understand, all others are shrouded to me.
If you do not like this, you need not continue. I have not written this for you."
Happy first Friday of the new year, friends!!

How about we kick off 2026 with another round of #notrealopeners? 😸

The rules are simple: let's share some practice opening lines to books that don't exist (...yet? 🤭)

I'll go first:

"A tattoo is only as good as the artist's ability to spell."

I would call the Clay Forest majestic in scope and its relation to the circle of life and death.
It's an infinite field of black trees of clay, surrounded by white grass.
Towering over is a tree with offshoots that grow in odd and unpredictable patterns, its base a throne.
#JanuaryWorldbuilders For me, one of the most enjoyable things about worldbuilding is coming up with grand ideas: scenery, a building, a tree, a planet, anything you consider big, beautiful, imposing, grand, majestic... pick your synonym. Tell me about it

The Draconis Ruvona are a cult that worship the natural possibilities of dragons, but not the dragons themselves. One of the story's protagonists is a former member of that cult and has every intention to see them destroyed.

What important groups/factions are there in your story?

I'm looking forward to releasing a second book. The first was a test of whether or not I could, this one is a question as to what could I do with it. The answer will not be: make an income, but I hope I can be proud of my work all the same.

I'll have to say something I specifically don't intend to reveal during this series, but may at some point following that. This is the exact nature of the original deities and the mechanics of reality. I do plan on focusing on one aspect of it, then leave the rest an unknown.
#JanuaryWorldbuilders, good day! In worldbuilding, sometimes we get deep into figuring out how things work because we want to explain it to the reader. Today, I ask you for the opposite: what is something that you intend to leave mysterious? What doesn't get explained?
January 2, 2026 at 9:27 AM
I think it's my lucky day because I found a broken binding edition of An Echo of Things to Come at a Harry Hartog of all places
I don't think they typically sell their special editions through other stores, so somebody must have traded it in?

Hit 10,000 words on book two, and I've barely scratched the surface.
The plan is for this to be longer than its predecessor and I'm cautiously optimistic that this can be achieved.

I'd like to do a thread featuring each of the characters I have commissioned art of and offering a bit of background about them. There are eight in total, so probably over something just as many days if I'm consistent (I'm not)

I'm A. J. (A for August, I won't tell you what the J is for) and I'm trying to be a more professional writer than I used to be because I love telling stories and want to do it more.
Avandoras began as part of a high fantasy DnD campaign, only to expand far beyond such confines.
#JanuaryWorldbuilders
Welcome to a new year of worldbuilding! Let's kick off this year with Day 1 of #JanuaryWorldbuilders in which I ask you: tell me about yourself and the world(s) you're building. Just a general overviews. We'll get into the weeds throughout the year
